The death of Richard Simmons is under investigation pending a cause of death from the medical examiner, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday, two days after the fitness icon was found dead at his L.A. home.
Simmons died Saturday, the day after his 76th birthday.
"We are awaiting the final cause of death ruling from the coroner's office before we can officially close the case," Norma Eisenman, public information officer for the LAPD said Tuesday.

Teresa Reveles began working for and living with the late fitness icon in 1987. In her first-ever interview, she tells PEOPLE of her former boss and friend: "I want to celebrate Richard. He always celebrated everyone else."

"This morning, Richard Simmons' brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner's office," began the statement. "The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard's death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor," the statement continued."
It also states tox screen was negative except for his normal prescriptions.
The fitness guru was found dead in his Los Angeles home on July 13 at age 76.

Fitness guru Richard Simmons died accidentally because of complications from recent falls and heart disease, a spokesperson for his family said Wednesday.
The spokesperson, Tom Estey, confirmed the cause and manner of death, pointing NBC News to a statement initially provided to People magazine, which broke the news of the reasons underlying Simmons' death.
The statement cites the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office, which it said called Simmons' brother, Lenny, with the news Wednesday.
