Det Acting Supt Mark Hatt has released a statement:

Our thoughts today are with Samantha’s family and friends.

Since Samantha’s disappearance at the start of February, a significant search and investigation has been undertaken in an effort to find her. This has included a dedicated and committed investigative effort led by the missing persons squad and also involving detectives from right across crime command, counter terrorism command and western region. This has been further supported by a range of specialist resources from across Victoria police.

To get to a position where we have been able to charge someone is testament to the commitment and dedication from all those areas.

We have also had exceptional support from many people in the Ballarat community, particularly local search volunteers and members of the SES and CFA.

I know that Samantha’s disappearance has had a profound impact on the Ballarat community and I want to thank all of those people who have assisted police in many different ways over the past month.

Terrible and hopeless news :(

Another woman's name added to endless list of victims who were attacked and murdered by sick and evil criminals.

"She was just going for a run"

Rest in Peace Dear Samantha.
Sincere condolences to Family.

Thank You Victorian Police
and
Selfless Community of Ballarat

for fighting for Justice for Samantha.

It could be the fate of any woman.

7news have published his name.
Now the social media vigilantes are going tear this interview to shreds because this reaction doesn’t meet their expectations ‍♂️

No wonder why people hire media consultants during times of crisis. I feel terrible for their family but I’m not looking forward to the social media reaction.

We are all human and react differently to situations so we shouldn’t judge others. MOO

Will the press conference be live.
If so does anyone have a link to watch it.

This is the ABC Live link. Periodically, it is running a banner across the bottom that a presser will be at 3:45pm AEDT.

God, what a waste of a life. I can't fathom what would make someone throw their whole life away at age 22. He had the whole world ahead of him.
oh SNAP, hestia, just thinking that too,. what on earth was in it for him to murder a 51yr old woman? a woman jogging thru the bush, sticking to the trail??

I hope he advises where her body is so the family can put her to rest.
I'm so sorry Sam :(
A person should be able to be safe in their surroundings, going about their life, and not be hurt.
I'm humbled that VicPol was able to make an arrest and did a good job.

MM’s demeanour does not come across as someone who has lost a wife or whose wife has been missing. The only thing I can surmise is it must be shock and it hasn’t truly hit home for him yet.

I feel so awful for the family.
He has known for over 2 weeks now that she was likely dead he is more then likely is shock and also grateful and relieved that he finally has some answers

I will say I was suspicious as anyone of MM based purely on the statistics of when a woman goes missing. Now that someone else has been charged however I feel the need to defend him a bit- some people really are just incredibly reserved and/or good at keeping up appearances. I myself, after losing a very close family member, was told repeatedly in the days and weeks after how I "seemed to be doing okay" (often in a sort of veiled judgmental tone, as if I should feel bad for appearing so "normal") when in reality I was a complete mess and my life was falling apart. Someone's behavior/appearance does NOT always line up with how they are really feeling and sometimes it's not even an indicator at all.
