SPARTANBURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Bond conditions have been changed for a Spartanburg County man accused of dumping his girlfriend’s car at an apartment complex after she went missing in May.

********
During the hearing, Young’s family asked the judge to deny bond since she is still missing. However, the judge was required to set bond for the charges of grand larceny and obstructing justice.

Collins’ bond was initially set at $9,000 with the condition that, once released, he would be placed on house arrest with GPS monitoring. He was ordered not to have any contact with Young’s family or possess a firearm. He bonded out of jail on June 6, but had not been able to return to his home under the home detention policy since it is where Young was living.

During a hearing earlier this month, prosecutors said Collins violated his bond agreement, claiming tactical gear and an AR-15 rifle were found where he was temporarily living.

Collins’ defense said the firearm didn’t belong to him and argued home detention did not make sense for the charges he faces. His attorney argued that investigators have not proven Collins took the car without permission. A motion for bond modification was approved by a judge on Monday, removing home detention as a requirement for Collins and allowing him to return home.

Young’s family was distraught by the decision and they believe officials “dropped the ball” in her case.

All other conditions of Collins’ bond remain in effect.

An anonymous donor is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to her location and identification of anyone responsible for her disappearance.

As of November 2023, Collins is now facing federal charges of grand larceny and obstructing justice.
Interestingly the article says that the case is being investigated by the " Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office."

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The United States Department of Justice announced that a man recently pleaded guilty to charges connected to the investigation into a missing woman from Spartanburg County.

Officials said 47-year-old Da’Ron Collins pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

*****
Collins hasn’t been sentenced for the charges but faces up to 20 years in prison for each offense, a $250,000 fine, and six years of supervision following his release.

The memo from prosecutors laid out three earlier reports that Collins had attacked and threatened others:
  • On Feb. 24, 2006, in Parkland, Wash., a former fiancée said she suspected Collins was cheating and confronted him. He choked her. When his roommates pulled them apart, Collins kicked her in the face. He was charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault. He completed a two-year diversionary program and the case was dismissed.
  • On April 1, 2015, at Fort Drum, N.Y., Collins threatened someone with what appeared to be a gun hidden in a shirt. He said, "I’m going to fill you with seven rounds!" He was charged with communicating a threat. The military disposed of the case administratively.
  • On July 27, 2018, in the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, Grafenwöhr, Germany, his ex-wife reported that he grabbed her by her arms and slammed her against a wall, bruising her arms. She said Collins harassed her and violated military protective orders at least three times. He was charged with assault consummated by battery. The military disposed of the case administratively.

Collins was arrested on federal charges Nov. 16, and prosecutors asked for pretrial detention the following day. Collins initially waived a bond hearing but asked a judge to set bail July 12.

On July 24, Magistrate Judge Kevin McDonald sided with prosecutors. His order, which recounted many of the concerns raised by the U.S. Attorney's Office, added two details:
  • In two recorded jailhouse phone calls, Collins said he wanted to punch his own daughter in the face for mishandling his house keys and his car while he was in jail. He knew at the time that she had cooperated with investigators.
  • At the hearing, Young's family said they thought they'd be in danger if Collins posted bail.

Details of Disappearance

Young was last seen in Boiling Springs, South Carolina on May 15, 2023. At the time of her disappearance, she lived in the 5000 block of Pratt Drive with Da'Ron Jerome Collins; a photo of him is posted with this case summary. He initially told police she never arrived home from her job at Spartanburg Regional Hospital that day.

Neighborhood surveillance video footage showed Young arriving home in her car at about 4:50 p.m., though, and Collins changed his story, admitted she'd gotten home at around 5:00 p.m. as the cameras indicated. Collins said they argued after she got home and she took a shower and left in her car, and this was the last time he saw her.

On May 17, Young's car was found in the parking lot of the nearby Windsor Palms apartment complex, backed in behind some bushes like someone had tried to hide it. The car is a white 2009 Nissan Infiniti G37 with tinted windows and the South Carolina license plate number LCK688; a photo of it is posted with this case summary.

Surveillance footage showed Collins driving the car into this parking lot where it was later found. The video showed him parking it and wiping down its surfaces at 7:34 p.m. He was wearing gloves at the time he was doing this. Afterwards Collins walked to a dumpster and discarded some things. Then he walked away in the direction of home.

He left his cellular phone at home when he drove Young's car to the parking lot, as if he was trying to conceal the fact that it was he who'd put the car there. He also manually deleted video footage from his own home surveillance footage system from around the time Young disappeared, and the surveillance system's event logs showed that home cameras were unplugged at critical times.

Two days before she went missing, the police had responded to a domestic violence incident at the couple's home: Collins had allegedly choked Young. No arrest was made at the time, as she declined to press charges against him. It's unclear if this incident was related to Young's disappearance two days later. Police stated Collins has a history of intimate partner violence but has never been convicted in connection with this.

In June 2023, Collins was charged with obstruction of justice and witness tampering in the federal investigation into Young's alleged kidnapping. In July 2024 he pleaded guilty. He is facing up to forty years in prison. The charges are not related to Young's actual disappearance but to his actions after she went missing.

Young has never been located but foul play is suspected in her case.
