Away from his house. His home and his girlfriend's home are 15-20 miles southwest of where his car was found. I google mapped this showing where his car was located versus where their homes are located.

Maybe they could ask friends/family if they know of anyone he would be going to visit that lives in that direction?

Looks like he had something else planned apart from getting the phone?

Was Interstate 85 busy at that time of night? (8.30pm)
 
I trust the brother, who said he went home to get his phone. I mean, why would he lie? But the car was found in the opposite direction. That causes me to have some doubt about who was driving it. First, they need to make sure they have done a thorough search of the area where the car was found. There have been several cases where a body was found within a quarter-mile of an abandoned car but went undiscovered for several weeks despite supposed "searches." The other thing they need to consider is that he made it home and surprised someone who was burglarizing the place. First, they'd need to come up with a theory of what the person might have been trying to steal. One common situation is where a burglar tries to rob a drug dealer to get his stash and cash. But that's a huge leap for me. I have reason to suspect that the guy was a dealer. Another thing people like to steal is guns. Perhaps he had a lot of guns at home. As far as the Spanish voice mail, I think the most likely scenario is that someone found the phone or purchased the phone or was given the phone. I doubt the person using the phone has any idea that it belongs to a man who is missing. I mean, it would take a really stupid person to use a phone owned by a missing person.

Why do you think he was a dealer? Wouldn't he ALWAYS keep his phone on him if he was?

I think this went badly, just not a great feeling about this case.
 
I was visiting this area last week and, looking at the map posted above, realize I stayed a a friend's house on the 7th, off of this exact exit on Ballard Rd. I did not hear anything about this. It is a rural area but people seem to be pretty aware of what is going on around them. That night a sheriff's truck pulled into my friends driveway checking out some feral pigs that were next door. Seemed random then and even more so now.
Also- I agree on the height-weight description. Either it is wrong or the photo is old and he was heavier. My SO is exactly this size and is tiny.

Let me clarify. I'm not saying that I think he's a drug dealer. I'm saying that I suspect someone may have robbed his home. And I was just throwing out a few common reasons for burglaries. I have no reason to suspect that he is not a perfect citizen. However, court records show 2-3 alcohol-related cases from within the past two years.

There is also a simple assault that he was charged with last year. Court records show a jury trial was requested early Febryary 2016 and late September 2016. I'm not very confident I know how the whole judicial system works but I believe the jury request was never completed. I see a few domestic violence charges as well, but from 2011. I hate to shame him but it is public record. I would guess that LE probably knew of him. Just my opinion.
Do domestic disputes and assault charges warrant enough of a motive for someone to go after him?
I think the drug dealer aspect can be ruled out. If he has been arrested this many times without having drugs or paraphernalia on him, then I find it unlikely he is distributing. He could have just been very lucky though.
 
Also, if he was walking along the interstate of an extremely busy interstate imo someone would have called the police. Two different people were walking along the same interstate this past weekend, both were questioned by police because they were notified of a walker. Oddly, the original guy they were searching for was claiming he was going to hurt and eat people (yes, eat people) and ended up finding another guy before they found him that was walking. I just hope David is found safely but it's just not looking promising. Imo I wanna suggest someone had his car and drove it from his house but I just can't wrap my brain around to believing that because of the neighborhood of folks that watch alot of activity or so I heard. It's just a strange mystery. Moo.

If he stumbled upon something at his house there should be evidence of a struggle or crime...I'm assuming they checked all that out.

You're right. Thank you for pointing that out. Don't know why I didn't think of that. What do you think happened? Just curious on other theories.

I think whatever happened, happened right there where his car was found, on his way back to his girlfriends house. Either he had car trouble or he stopped to help someone else who pretended to have car trouble, but was up to no good. I am more inclined to believe he had car trouble (hazard lights were on) and someone(s) saw an easy target driving a BMW. They offered to give him a ride?

But I can't figure something out ... If he had car trouble, why didn't he text his girlfriend that he would be running late? Why didn't he call a tow truck?

There are gaping holes in the whole situation.

Possibly it happened quickly. I haven't read anything about if he had a flat or anything. If a link was posted saying specifics of if he had a flat, car run hot, etc then I apologize. Imo if he has a flat but no spare or whatever was wrong with his car, then someone could have pulled up swiftly seeing him driving a BMW thinking possibly he has money and they offered him help. Another theory is that he wanted to disappear but I can't grasp the motive of him wanting to disappear or make it seem like he was kidnapped or something. Like you said so many gaps in this one.

How could he, or anyone for that matter, text or call from a phone with no SIM card? Fwik a phone is just a paper weight without a SIM card, is that not right?

If the GF is saying he said he had to go home to get his phone, then why does someone else have the phone if it was left at his house?
Fishy issues.
 
I'm not sure if you can make a call or text without a SIM card. If not, WHY did he go home to get a useless phone?

He went home to get his phone and appeared to be heading back to his girlfriends house when whatever happened, happened. His phone would have been on him at that point (useless maybe?) but a perp took it from him and changed settings to Spanish ... maybe sold it or just ditched it.

ETA: I just saw the post that his car was headed in the opposite direction of girlfriends house. That presents a bunch of scenarios ... none of them good.
 
I'm just gonna throw out some of my thoughts.
Not sure if this helps at all but it seems David Wayne Oakley has a connection to Oxford, NC. I keep seeing it come up on my Google searches of him. I believe he was maybe born here and then moved to SC in the early 2000s (that's when you start seeing his arrests). But to get to Oxford, NC from Anderson, SC, you have to take I-85 N, which is a popular road I know. Wondering if he was heading back up there to get away or for safety? Just speculating.

I've been reading a lot of comments about what happened to his car. From the reports that I have read, his car had a dead battery from his hazard lights being on, which to me indicates a voluntary stop to help someone. Maybe the police wouldn't mention if he had mechanical troubles with the car? I think this would be a big clue as to what happened to David.
If he had mechanical troubles, then he stopped because he had to. His hazard lights were on to indicate he needed help from someone. He couldn't contact anyone because he didn't have a SIM card, so the hazard lights were a way to indicate to passers by that he needed assistance. Either he stayed at the car, got help from someone (who either kidnapped him or offered him a ride somewhere) or he left on his own to try and find some help/pay phone. And if he was under the influence, (the reason I say this is because of his DUI's) then he could have stumbled into some trouble, whether it be the elements or someone's property.
But the more I think about it the more I believe he did not stop voluntarily. I believe if someone had overtaken him at this stop while he was trying to help them then there would be signs of a struggle.
Could the car have been dumped? Lots to think about in this case.

My immediate thought was the car was dumped. Townville is approx. 16 mi. west of Anderson. Where his car was found is about 20 road miles northeast of Townville, and 15 road miles -also northeast- of Anderson.

So based on the above quotes, the scenario I'm thinking of is that David does make it back to his house, phones/texts his brother -or the brother calls him- and tells him he had been at his GF's (e.g., "Sorry you couldn't get ahold of me. I was at my GF's but didn't have my phone with me. Just came home to get it"). Maybe they make plans to get together, but David doesn't show, so his brother reports him missing (it was the brother who reported him missing the same day - pretty quick, IMO).

So LE contacts the GF, at which point she confirms that David had been at her home until 8:30 PM and also tells them she had been calling his phone, it goes to voicemail which has been switched to Spanish.

It seems to me maybe David's brother became concerned quickly because David shared with him he had been having car trouble, had been drinking earlier in the evening, etc.?

It is interesting, though, that his voicemail had been changed to Spanish. Does he have any Spanish-speaking friends or acquaintances?

As far as the missing SIM card, my impression is David's phone has been located -I don't think I've seen anything to indicate otherwise ... would like to know)-, and it was at that point the phone was found to be missing its SIM card:
"A police report from Anderson Police Department states Oakley's phone was changed to Spanish and goes straight to voicemail. Relatives said the phone did not have a SIM card."

Still leaning towards something happening to David closer to Townville or Anderson. But why leave the blinkers on? Perhaps because the perp wanted to send LE in the wrong direction (i.e., David was never anywhere near where his car was found)?
