JUST IN: Authorities find the body of 6-year-old Faye Marie Swetlik; case now a homicide
2:05 p.m. Update:
Authorities confirm they have found the body of 6-year old Faye Marie Swetlik and say the case is now being investigated as a homicide. At this time, no arrests have been made.

In addition, authorities confirm they have also found the body of a male in the same neighborhood. The investigation into his death is just now beginning.


In a short press conference, Cayce Department of Public Safety officials said they do not believe there is any danger to the community.

Monday, Feb. 10
Family members told authorities the last time they saw Swetlik was around 3:33 p.m. after she got off the school bus and was playing in the front yard of her residence on Londonberry Lane in Cayce, South Carolina.

After looking for her for about an hour, her family called 911 around 4:45 p.m, authorities said. Family members told authorities that they "lost track of her."

Wednesday, Feb. 12
Surveillance video from Monday was released of the 6-year-old getting off the school bus before she vanished.

Thursday, Feb. 13

Authorities said her body was found, along with a deceased male, in the Churchhill Heights neighborhood of Cayce, South Carolina.

The coroner confirmed the girl's death but has not released the identity of the dead man, Cayce Public Safety Director Byron Snellgrove said.

Snellgrove didn't immediately provide any evidence to link the two deaths, but said at a brief news conference to announce the developments that there was no danger to the public. He said no arrests have been made in the girl's death.

My deepest sympathies to Faye's family. This is such sad news. I hoped this wouldn't be the outcome. LE did their jobs to the full extent. I was nothing but impressed with how quickly and thoroughly they responded. My sympathies to them as well. This has to be hard for them too.

The Lexington County Coroner confirms Faye Swetlik’s body was found at 11 a.m. today. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday. No info. has been releases on the male’s body also found in the subdivision.

The bereaved grandmother of Faye Swetlik shared a video showing the six-year-old singing ‘You Are My Sunshine’ just hours after authorities in South Carolina confirmed that she was found dead.

The body of Swetlik, who has been missing since Monday afternoon, was found in her South Carolina neighborhood on Thursday, the same day investigators said the body of an unidentified man was located nearby.

'It's with extremely heavy hearts that we announce we have found the body,' Director of Public Safety for Cayce, Byron Snellgrove said through tears at a Thursday news conference where he spoke for only about a minute and took no questions.

Lexington District 2 give tips for parents on how to best talk about Faye's death
Lexington County School District Two sent out an automated message to parents of students at Springdale Elementary. Faye Swetlik was a first-grader at the school.

Parents we spoke to say they're not looking forward to the conversation, even though their children have been asking about Faye.

"...keep responses at the child's level of understanding."

The school plans to have extra counselors available to speak with students, teachers and staff at Springdale Elementary.

Here's what we know so far:
  • Faye Swetlik's body was found around 11 a.m. Thursday
  • An autopsy is scheduled Friday at MUSC in Charleston
  • A dead male was also found in the Cayce neighborhood during the search for Swetlik. His identity and details related to his death have not been released.
  • Swetlik's family discovered she was missing at about 3:45 p.m. Monday, shortly after a school bus dropped her off at home, and called the police about an hour later.
  • Before her disappearance, she was last seen playing in her front yard
  • Multiple law enforcement agencies have been involved in a large-scale search for Swetlik in the days since she went missing.
  • Her death was announced at an impromptu press conference at 1 p.m. Thursday.
  • Swetlik was a first-grader at Springdale Elementary
  • Investigators are asking anyone with information related to Swetlik's death to call a hotline at 803-205-4444
  • No arrests have been made.
