SUMTER, S.C. – A 12-year-old boy trick-or-treating with his family in central South Carolina was shot from inside a home Friday and killed, and his father and brother were wounded by the gunfire, authorities said.

A suspect was in custody and police called the shooting an isolated incident.

Every year there is always at least one child who gets hurt or killed trick or treating. My prayers go out to the family of this boy with hopes his father and brother make a full recovery.

After every school shooting, gun advocates come out & argue that teachers should be armed in order to make schools safer. I suppose they'll now be arguing that moms & dads should arm themselves to escort their children on Halloween.

Too many crazy people. Too many guns. Too many innocent people dying because we Americans can't imagine living without our guns & assault rifles.

How sad. I can't imagine what is wrong with people sometimes. Prayers to the little boy and his family.

The shooting suspect, Quentin Patrick, was in custody, a jail official said. Patrick, 22, has been charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. The jail official said she didn't know whether Patrick had an attorney and his telephone number was unpublished.

The family was headed home from a city-sponsored event downtown when they decided to stop at a few homes, Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said. The father and his four children approached a home with a porch light on about 8:30 p.m. EDT while their mother waited nearby in a vehicle.

I cannot begin to imagine how horrific it was for the mother to witness this from the car. You never think about someone just gunning down children while they innocently go Trick Or Treating. :(

That 22 yo will probably be some crankhead who was paranoid or something. I cannot fathom any reason for his actions other than pure evil.

It really is not safe anymore to go to strangers' homes to Trick Or Treat. Those days are long gone and people need to get a reality check before they take their children around on Halloween. My neighborhood was dark last night because we individually decided it was a bad idea for whatever reason. I wasn't going to open my door to strangers with home invasions being so prevalent around the city. I don't know what their reasons were, but no one rang our doorbells so the message was clear.

OMG i feel so sad for this family...
this is totally something we would do....stop at a few places on the way home and trick a treat some more....
a fun night out...you're going home to look at all your candy....and settle in your home for the night...
the kids are all excited about their candy....
and a freak thing...
gunshots.....
and your 12 year old son is GONE :(
Your whole world is turned upside down...
and right before the holidays....
i feel awful
OMG
i feel so sick to my stomach...
i have an 11 year old....
i can't imagine this at all...

I just read about it and came here to see if more was on it.

I'm so sickened by it as well. This is so sad! :(

I can't even imagine how this family must be feeling.

I have an 11 year old too soyesterday. This hits close to home for me.:(

This happened 5 miles from where I live. It's very sad. The guy that did the shooting is a CONVICTED FELON! He sid he had been shot before and was not going to be shot again...he also had 7,500 dollars in his houise which his girlfreind tried to escape with...drug dealers, I believe.
My prayers go out to this family who lost their son on a night that should have been full of fun.

I'm thinking this guy who murdered him got a bit paranoid because he was selling drugs not because he had been robbed in the past. He KNEW it was halloween!
Seems the gf was caught trying to leave with over $7500 in cash and couldn't explain where she got it. I think this was a drug house.

This happened 5 miles from where I live and word is that it was a drug house. The thing that really gets me is this guy is a convicted felon...shouldn't even have a weapon...
sounds like he was afraid of being robbed and also of drugs ..he has that much cash in his home...something's up...he is a dealer, I believe. Shooting someone with an AK 47 too...there are holes all in the door and windows...saw the pic in our daily paper.

That 22 yo will probably be some crankhead who was paranoid or something. .

I had the same thought when I heard about this. I've seen someone who was on a meth binge for a few days, by the end of it he was thinking and seeing all kinds of crazy . He thought there were soldiers in the trees outside, watching him.

Not that I think it should make a bit of difference in the punishment this monster receives, of course. I feel so horrible for this family.

It looks like you pretty well nailed it as far as your projected profile of the shooter.
Forget Obama and Palin effigys this scum needs to be hung from the porch for real.
There is no possible mitigating circumstance whatsoever.

This is why we only go to people's houses that we know. It's scarey. I feel ao bad for this family. I wonder why he hought he was being robbed if they knocked on the door? This is so sad.
