The family of walker Paul Conway have thanked rescuers after he was traced in Lochaber on Tuesday, 17 September, nearly a week after he was last heard from.
The 67-year-old from the Newcastle area had travelled to the Highlands on Tuesday, 10 September planning to complete a walk between Glenfinnan and Inverie in Knoydart.
He was reported missing having failed to arrive on Friday, 13 September.
Extensive searches were carried out and he was traced safe and well on Tuesday, 17 September in a remote area south of Loch Morar having become lost while on route.
He was taken to hospital as a precaution given the extensive time spent outdoors but was otherwise uninjured.
Paul’s son Chris Conway said: “On behalf of the whole family I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in searches for our father over the past few days.
“He is in good health and good spirits after this experience and again I would like to thank everyone who has helped find him and bring him to safety.”
Inspector Ross McCartney of Fort William Police Station said: “We are delighted that Paul has been found and reunited safe and well with his family.
“This was a challenging and protracted search involving a number of partner agencies and specialist police resources.
“These included Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, the RAF Mountain Rescue Team, Search and Rescue Dog Association, HM Coastguard and the Police Scotland Mountain Rescue Team.
“We are grateful to everyone involved in the search for their efforts in bringing about this positive outcome.”

Seems like he did just get lost then and nothing more sinister.
Having been found somewhere south of Loch Morar, I'd guess that he followed his route to near Loch Arkaig then accidentally went up Glen Pean rather than Glen Dessary. There's a couple of bothies on this route too, Glenpean and Oban (not to be confused with the town of Oban which is not close by), so he would have had good shelter for a few nights. Probably utilising a lot of his military experience to stay alive for a week out there - quite impressive really.

I hope he got his pint!

(I'm so thrilled that he was found safe. Excellent work by all of the agencies involved.)
