Rockerville, SD 57702 Area Snow Depth

If I’m reading the map right, looks like anywhere from 6-9 inches currently in Rockerville. High 25 Low 4 with wind chills 10 below to zero in the morning.
The temps this afternoon, according to several sites, is in the low to mid 20s, which is well below normal. But there doesn't appear to be anything close to normal approaching for another 10 days or so. Saturday will be near or at freezing (32), with sunny skies, but there will be a high wind.
One site I was on said that in Keystone, the snow has basically melted, probably due to the sun from the last few days. But they are expecting from 1 to 3 inches of snow over the next couple of days. After that, the snow lets up but the cold continues.
I don't know if they are still feeling the urgency to send out search parties, but I hope they keep looking. Although I know that if they find her in the hills, it isn't the outcome we would prefer.

I want to put this right and abide by TOS. To any of us that have lived in winter climates and snowmobile, hike or hunt in cold weather, those are warm temps if dressed for it. I can see it interfering with a search as far as where she may be or have ended up but I do not see it so far as being able to handle doing a search or people freezing who are doing the search or with today's technology. When the sun it out, it now has some heat in it, even in ND, SD, MN, WI, MI etc. Is it Florida? No of course not. But it feels like a heat wave after below zero temps, etc. I would bet Canadians and people in Alaska can say the same. It may effect finding her, or dogs getting her scent, but it does not effect going to look dressed in the right gear. Just my speculation and opinion. Those are warm temperatures in the north...

I was out with my family today, walking around in 40 degrees. I forgot my jacket and was wearing a light sweater, jeans & snow boots (we had a rare snow event where I live and it also rains a lot so I wear waterproof boots). I thought of Serenity. I don’t know how she went out in what she was wearing and kept going. All I wanted was to get in our van because of how cold I was and I had only been walking for 5 minutes. I know as a kid I did crazy stuff like jumping into extremely cold water or playing in the snow in the wrong clothes and having a blast. So, perhaps she was able to withstand the cold when she was running away for a time and got too far? I just keep thinking... maybe, just maybe she turned back or found shelter. Maybe she will be a miracle story. I’m still praying. I feel so sad about this precious little girl guys.

Most scenarios most of us can think where she would be alive are pretty far fetched. Yet there are some but again pretty far fetched. This girl is missing and it should be blasted amongst the airwaves like an Amber Alert. jmo. There is no doubt she is missing and she has not been found. I entirely agree with the Serenity Alert and the JC case was another one where an Amber Alert could not be issued for some time.

I enjoy reading all of those far fetched ideas. I believe most of us do, to some degree.
The alternative is just too sad.

And I agree wholeheartedly that MSM has lost interest in this missing little girl, and someone needs to be blasting Serenity's case from the rooftops, mountaintops, and all the airwaves!

I get a bit cynical in some cases that I always feel PR plays in, even with the most well intentioned personnel it happens. But then I have not been on SM at all in weeks so maybe it is being blasted from the rooftops (I doubt it somehow). I think I will do so and publicize this case if it is not being publicized enough. The best thing they can do even PR wise is be honest and forthright. She probably did run. And all probably were well intended in the response.

I do like thinking too of those far fetched scenarios that have her alive, warm, safe and well.

The search seems to be getting coverage in her immediate area, and while it's comforting to see wider publicity, I'm not sure it would do any good. The searchers seem to have been doing all they can under difficult conditions.

Yeah, and she probably crawled into a hole or under a tree or something trying to find a little warmth :(
That’s what’s I’m thinking :(
Which means she probably won’t be found until the snow melts.

IMO
In looking at the terrain from different camera shots of the search, it does look pretty rugged - even more so than I thought - and hard to navigate, with plenty of spaces she could have crawled into. She couldn't have simply run through those hills, for the most part.
And it looks like the search efforts will stay for the most part on hold until the weather breaks, though I think there have been a few forays out on days where the weather is more accomodating.
This was a week ago:
Weather, terrain make search for Serenity tough

The situation deteriorated the seemingly the moment Serenity walked off at 10:45 a.m. on Feb. 3.

"At 11 o'clock, temperatures were in the 20s, but by 12 o'clock they'd already dropped into the teens," said meteorologist Mike Modrick. "And by the time the sun went down the temperatures were in the single digits so they dropped all through the day."

Added Thom: "It got down close to zero that night when she first went missing and it started to snow and since then we've had additional snow. So that has complicated the search. It makes it more difficult for the searchers and in particular it makes it more difficult for the K-9s."

Specialty dogs called in from a three state-region couldn't find her in part because the severe cold tamps down any scents they might pick up. It also makes it tough on their sinuses and feet.

It's extremely rough terrain.

With lots and lots of places a small child might curl up in.

Searchers we've spoken with say its treacherous out there, especially in the snow.

And that element looks like it's only going to get worse.

"Well now what we have coming in is we have two days, Friday and Saturday -- and maybe even Sunday --there will be some fresh snowfall," said Modrick. "And now it's going to stay cold again and it's going to stay cold through the rest of February and probably not going to get some sustained days with above freezing temperatures until early March."

The word from the Pennington County Sheriff's office Thursday evening was that, while investigators keep working on leads, the outdoor search for Serenity will stay on hold until the weather breaks.

Thank you for the information. I think we sometimes forget that even the dogs are affected by adverse weather conditions. Goodness, where is this baby?

I am just now seeing this, and I have so many questions, bear with me.
When she seen “leaving on foot” , who saw that? A child or an adult?
If she were seen by an adult, did that adult attempt to stop her?
Given the location of the children’s home, it seems unlikely she would’ve been passed by a car on that road, if in fact she was on “the road“. Of course it is possible that someone picked her up. Someone not so nice.
Has the children’s home it’s self been searched?
Did she actually leave there at all?

I know I am not asking questions that others have not already asked. Just putting it out there

I'm sure I've left a few things out but this is how I understand it, in a nutshell.

Two staff members and four children were in the gym. As one child ran away (but stayed inside the building), Serenity took off (approx 10:45 a.m.), running outside. The other staff member stayed with the two remaining children but called for help. Staff then searched for Serenity before calling 911 at 12:26 pm.

A woman dropping off a family member saw Serenity at the cattle gate about 11 a.m. The woman had a passenger with her who stayed in the car while she went inside to tell somebody that there was a child outside. The passenger saw Serenity heading north on the road. When the woman came back out, they drove up and down the road but couldn't find Serenity.
MOO

Answers aren't that easy, as there has been some differences in what has been reported by MSM.
Serenity was last seen by the side of the road, crossing the road and heading up into the hills, per one account. It appears somebody (an adult) waiting in a car in the parking lot saw her by the road. But it was also reported that a staff member looked out and saw her heading up into the hills. And yes, the staff member tried to stop her, but the buildings don't sit right on the road. By the time the staff member got to the hill and attempted to find Serenity, she had disappeared. I believe at that point the staff member went back to get help.
It was reported that the Home was searched just in case, although poor Serenity couldn't have gotten back in if she had headed back, because the doors are locked from the outside and you have to press a buzzer to be let it - I think. I don't remember if that was actually reported as a fact.
Could she have been picked up? Possible, but unlikely, given the out of the way location, the weather, and the report that she was last seen heading up into the hills. But it is possible she ducked back down to the road and followed that. They simply don't know. And the terrain is very rugged, and the weather has been uncooperative.

So really and truly tragic all the way around. Every set of circumstances were against her here. How helpless the people there must’ve felt.
