Except for the fact, that Aldritch Ames was tested like 50 years earlier and two times trained, first by the Western experts than the Eastern experts to be able to do exactly that.
The extremity of the examples show in a way the desperation of the cause. However, what is a problem is the interpretation of the results.

Peter

Ames was tested in 1986 and 1991, I do not believe the validity of polygraphs has improved significantly since that time. As bad as the CIA interpreters were, I think they would be more proficient than SCPD staff.

as George Costanza of Seinfeld so eloquently stated
......." just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it"

He's the attorney who is representing the Gilbert family.

And here is his faithful assistant Vesselin Mitev;

And here is a nice review of them and their firm;

White Collar Crook , Careless Attorney, Lack of Experience, Poor Skills

Don't get me started again. I can mock these guys all day long. Seriously, would YOU hire anyone who wore fedoras like those two wear? Nothing against fedoras, but those things are hideous. I submit to you, kind sleuthers, that there has never and will never be an era where those hats pictured above will be considered fashionable.

ok clem - its ok that you dont like fedoras.

but they are attorneys, why does Mari have an attorney? if not to sue over this case. Since they are not sueing anyone, Shannan must have died accidentally.

To kill a Mockingbird,
Could it be because SCPD still calls it an active investigation?

Active or inactive the actions and results are the same, LE is waiting for a tip, lead, or confession. When it is at least two years since a crime occurred, not much chance of LE solving it.

The are not charging anyone in relation to the case, they do not appear to be 'shaking the trees', they have not got the FBI or State Police more involved.

Since Dormer said she drowned, and the autopsy did not contradict that drowning theory, LE wants the case to go away.

I think SCPD has a moral obligation to publicly make a commitment to actively try and solve this case. Currently their actions appear to show little commitment or action.

Why are there not weekly or monthly briefings to the media. Chief Charles Moose, in the Beltway Sniper case was a positive example of LE keeping everybody informed, which resulted in a member of the public spotting the criminals and leading to their arrest.

I agree with you except for one point. SFPD isn't waiting for a tip. I think, they hope there will be no too loud tips, hints and suggestions. Why else would they so consequently ignore every input?

Windsor,
I hope you don't think I was being snarky or defending the SCPD. I wasn't. I feel the passion and frustration in your post and I empathize completely. Especially after reading posts by Hawk and others who have questioned the integrity of the persons leading this investigation. Without trust and open communication, keeping the community abreast of the investigation without being defensive there's nothing but speculation which can lead to paranoia! And that is certainly not safe for the public or the police IMHO.

I have said before, God bless Mari Gilbert and the other family members for their patience. I would have been over there in Oak Beach hitting someone over the head with his fake leg demanding answers. Mari's smart enough NOT to do that. I just wished she would have sought out a PI the likes of Jay Salpeter to help her get to the truth regarding Shannan's death. Maybe she did, I don't know. This is so very frustrating, I agree.

The reality is the cops probably know little or nothing. It is not because they are incompetent, it is because the people expect much more than is realistic.

Investigating a homicide is not a work of science where you can quantify and identify the information and then come to valid conclusions.

We just witnessed this with the Etan Patz case. Everything the police learned or think they learned over the past 33 years went up in a puff of smoke. They think they have a fire now because there is a lot of 'smoke'. Maybe they have nothing.

Of course a lot of profilers said 33 years long, it wasn't that registered child molester because that one LIVED in the area and would go hunting to another area, while this area could be hunting ground for someone who WORKED there but didn't live there. And LE pulled a Truthspider on all of those.
Same with this case. A lot of suggestions how to solve this one, but we will never find out, because SFPD ignores them all.

the above article states in the 2nd sentence
"The Suffolk County Homicide Squad is still investigating the circumstances surrounding Shannan Gilbert's death, said Acting Police Commissioner Edward Webber."

so sleuther spade - looks like you are right.

Some months ago, a freind asked a PD in Ohio about a case from 1962. They couldn't give any information, the case was still open and the PD was still investigating. Yeah, right! I see that coming in Suffolk County too.

How absolutely frustrating.

cops holding back information LOL. Just go to the regular bars they go to and you could a blow by blow of the investigation. They used to go to Butterfields and regale each other with tales of derring do.

You first have to have something before you can hold it back.

Look what they did with the Etan Patz case. The police commissioner heard about it while in London and he tweeted the world.

Wow, your post let me look like a 2nd class cynic. But at least, they could tell us the ME reports and some more details about the circumstances of how ther bodies were found (position for example). There is information even SFPD can't avoid to have. Some kind of very penetrant information, I guess.

I tried to stimulate a fund raising program for a reward fund, or maybe as someone suggested to hire a PI.

Understandably this forum does not allow any fund raising activity through the forum.

Does somebody have the ability to set up an ethical internet based fund raising campaign so we can generate some money for a substantial reward and hire an effective Private Investigator.

It appears to me that there is a consensus among most of us Sleuthers that the SCPD will never solve these cases and in fact, they are likely an impediment to a solution.

Ideas, suggestions and volunteers please!

They need a New Yorker. middle aged, retired homicide cop, connected meaning he has friends on both sides of the track, yet he is ethical and follows the law. and he needs to be technically gifted.
Jmho.

We have on this forum technical knowledge, behavioral science, and basic forensics in abundance. What we need would be boots on the ground. Tough boots. And access to some information only LE has, like the traffic cams. But SCPD is sitting on that and breeds.
