All these blunders make one wonder about SMS's comment about them trying to cover up their tracks, but not good enough... CWW didn't even return the GPS, which is not only disrespectful, but stupid to keep in his possession even after "deleting" the trip info. And not throwing away burner phones? Well, I guess since he was a poor broke guy, they might have been useful again sometime.
Telling everyone when and where they were going? Not getting rid of clothing used in the crime, etc. (Well since the black towels wouldn't stain, they could just go ahead and use them for everyday use.) Gotta be frugal, W/right? Just exactly what DID they try to cover up? And I still don't get the logic of the three hammers. iirc, Two at the scene and one someone brought back home? I thought they might have dumped a clean hammer so no prints/DNA would be found, but from the forensics it looks like the hammer on the scene was the actual weapon. wow, absolutely thought they had committed the perfect murder.
Lot of good points, where good plan gone bad. Blunders does make one wonder. Were any blunders intentional to frame JR if things go haywire.
I think in the planning, and the premise is first we won't get caught, or, they wouldn't do it in the first place or at least the way they did, they are planning
forward, we'll do this, so x won't happen, we will do y, so z won't happen.
In the investigation to the crime you go
backwards and find all the holes or blunders, what did happen. Obviously a lot more than that, but they start at the crime scene or event and have to work back from there.
One thing I think they didn't take into account is how tired they would be-- which is why I think they just forgot the gps with everything else they had to take care of. Should of made a list, guys.
I think the black towels was a clever idea even if the plan was to use them and dump them, someone finding them would be less likely to see bloody towels on black, vs. blood on light colored towels which raise the danger response in anyone who might find them.
Three hammers also is confusing, maybe one for each to do the deed, maybe Mark
was supposed to be there too, and he wasn't able to make it, or the plan changed? Or, maybe JR just likes his hammers and wanted one for a souvenir? Called himself "the hammer" after all. Or make sure they really notice a hammer was the weapon of choice. Just in case they get caught, who is the hammer guy?
JR definitely has that "take something from the scene of the crime" with you vibe. And maybe he was just plain ole lazy and decided to take care of the bloody clothing later and didn't get around to it. We know he was a bragger and didn't mind telling folks about his other bad deeds and not just to his girlfriend. As you say, they absolutely thought they had committed the perfect murder.
Though I have also pondered if caught was plan B to totally pin it on JR, or was it to pin it on him at some point. Was he framed?
JR does the hammer work. JR is in possession of the bloody clothing. JR uses his email in the gps (a planned mistake?). JR is a bragger with a big mouth, can't wait to get home and spills the beans to the girlfriend during pillowtalk. Includes her in destruction of evidence, having her throw out bits and pieces out the window of the truck.
CWW must of known he would be a loose cannon and would talk about it at some point. I think the plan was if they did get caught was to make it look like CWW was not there, but JR was. What was JRs back up plan? Did he leave his phone at home? He told both his boss he was going to FL for a graduation and gf he was going for work. He wasn't even trying to not place himself at the scene.
Don't you think CWW would of counseled him a bit with don't tell anyone about anything, keep your trap shut. I think he is the one who was set up to take the fall in the event things went south.
I have thought that as far as AW goes, CWW may have totally underestimated her intelligence--emotional intelligence to keep her mouth shut, even though she really didn't know why he was going. He might of said I am going on vacation, she insists where, he says Florida but don't tell anyone, don't want people who are helping us out to think I have money for fun. She is not too smart, but very emotional-- feeling left out, so tells her friends about her feelings, etc. I commented before on what her state might have been. She doesn't know that this vacation involves murder, so she's miffed and complains and inadvertently spills the beans.
I also wonder, since I believe this plot was hatched at the time of the wedding, that CWW felt secure that she could not testify against him if the stuff hit the fan, or even any other things he may have been involved in that she may know about. But getting married does not zip ones lips on a big mouth.
