SoCal Earthquakes

LOL, I think the thing that bothers me more than the quake itself, is the startled lurch away from me by the cats. We live in a two story house on a hill. If we're upstairs, the cats run downstairs and if we're downstairs, they run upstairs. What? They think it's me? :)

Anyway, I've been in the San Diego area for two years. When I moved here my son (who already lived here) said there's no earthquakes here. LOL.....the first one we had that I could feel, my son and his family were on vacation in Utah. The Easter earthquake, he and his family were in Vegas for a basket-ball tournament for one of his sons. I asked him to let me know the next time he was gonna leave town!

I don't know if it's because I'm on a hill or what, but I can feel more quakes than my son and his family and they only live about 4 miles from me. Sometimes you can feel a quake upstairs but not downstairs. They've been intense enough to wake my daughter up. Last night felt like someone tried to pull the floor out from under you. It was swift and jolting. My daughter was walking through the garage on the phone and the person she was talking to could actually hear things rattling. LOL, he felt it a few seconds later.

I looked at the links given here and it seems Ocotilla (sp?) has been seeing all the action, but they're relatively minor. It actually has to be about a 4 or more for us to feel it here.

Keeps you on your toes! :D

PS....it hasn't been highly publicized, but from the Easter quake there really was quite a bit of damage in the Calexico and Mexicali areas. There was, I believe, almost an entire school district closed in Calexico because of damage to the schools. My dil's family lives there. Anyway, they had to realign their schools and the children had to be transferred to other schools. fran

Fran, I hear ya about the cats..when we are expecting tornado's there is static in the air that all of us Okies know when we walk outside. My black lab Serra just goes berserk of the charts.

I have lived in tornado alley for 50 years..(yeah I'm old) and I have been through more than I can count.

Back when we were younger, we chased tornado's for the Civil Defense and reported to them...pretty fun...I was standing on my porch in one and a piece of sheet metal off of a barn somewhere came screaming by! It took my neighbor's roof of and my house was untouched.

We don't go into cellars..I'll take my chances up top I freak out when confined in small places.lol

My dog, Lucky, doesn't do anything but lay there like a bump on a log!

The U.S. Geological Survey's seismic-imaging project in the Coachella and Imperial valleys is underway. They claim that these underground explosions don't cause earthquakes, but it sure seems coincidental that we are now having multiple earthquakes, some just 30 seconds apart.

We've been feeling the Calexico/Mexicali quakes quite strongly here in Palm Springs.

I'm seriously thinking of installing seat belts on the chairs in the TV room.

(Before anyone depends too heavily on the prognostication of cats, let me share that my last cat jumped straight up in the air at the smallest tremor and then spent the next 24 to 48 hours hiding under the bed. My current cat simply looks at me when a quake begins; if I don't panic, he goes back to sleep.)

I've never been close to a tornado and I don't wanna' be either! They're skeerryyyy! :)

My sis lives outside OKC. OMG! She's lost part of her house on one, and last year, she lost most of the shingles on her roof plus other items. To the tune of over 25K$. The most astounding part is about the last one, they didn't know about the damage to their own home, until neighbors had a contractor out and he approached them too. My BIL went up to the roof with the guy and was shocked! LOL, especially seeing how he was at home when the tornado went by. But seriously, my sis has been at work both times a tornado hit her house.

One of the quakes, I think the Whittier quake, knocked the chimney off my mom's house in SGV. Just when I was showing my house for sale in OC in 2008, there was an earthquake. LOL, when the prospective buyer said, "Is that a sign?" I said "Yes, it means this house can withstand earthquakes!" ehhhh.....she wasn't buyin' it, if you get my drift.

Anyway, last night my son was talking to me after the largest quake and at the same time his wife was talking to her mom on another phone. Just then there was a quake in Calexico, but it never made it to here. phewwwww. ;)

I guess no matter where you live, there's a price to be paid. Earthquakes, tornados, floods, hurricanes, mass amounts of snow. It just depends on what you're able to handle. Meeee..............I think I'll take an occasional earthquake to enjoy this California living. It's worth it! I will say though, I traveled across the U.S. last year and saw so many of these other PLACES,............it's easy to understand how each of us knows we live in the best place of the U.S.A. They all have their unique qualities. I guess it just depends on what makes an individual happy.

Meeeee...............I like the sun shine!! oh,............and moderate temperatures close to the west coast (ie beach!!!)!! :D

My husband has been in So. CA all week on business. I called him Tues. morning and asked him what he thought of being in his first earthquake. His answer was: "What earthquake?" He had slept through it! He has always bee a heavy sleeper; I guess I didn't know how heavy. Hope everyone who lives there and visits there remains safe!

Just wanted to check and ask how everyone in earthquake area is today? Are you still experiencing aftershocks? Hope all are ok?

My husband and I are Insurance Adjuster's and I have seen a lot of damage:croc:over the years and we have had close calls

Lol floods too, Okla and Arkansas are in flood watch. The flood in Ark was on the Missouri River...20 dead and over 40 missing. Just got an update on tornados..Storm moving into Ark, and expecting more rain tonight.

Well, my sis just called me from Wadena, Mn. Seems a tornado came through and leveled some of their town. She's lucky, only has a tree on her front porch and some shingles off her new roof. Unfortunately, my nieces brand new car didn't fair too well. It's not any match for a tree. :(

I think, for now, I'll stick with earthquakes. Hopefully my luck will hold out and I won't suffer any property damage.

I knew this thread would be up when I got back inside! All I felt was about three big thumps, but they were doozies.

My husband just called and said it was the first time he felt and earthquake on the ship. (He wasn't on the ship during the Easter quake, though.)

Felt it good here in Carlsbad! Powerful. This time Lucky freaked out and barked his head off. Usually, he's just a bump on a log...even during the Easter quake which lasted much longer.
