Thank you for the posts Prime and JJ. This case is dragging on badly.

I read a Tweet made by Traceyams which stated that until the time he is found guilty he can use any money held in trust to pay his expenses. It was in answer to a tweet but I cannot find it at the moment. It is not on her Twitter Account. She also said Botha and Cambrink would be charging roughly ZAR 30,000 (about £1700) a day.

No doubt there will be many other costs involved. HvB has an Attorney to pay and court costs.

Welcome to South Africa ... not. One man was shot this morning in what appears to be a gang-relating shooting at Cape Town International Airport.

Hi Everyone  Enjoy, lets drink to Olckers departing the witness box!

They don't have metal detectors at the Intl Airport?

Poor man, probably an innocent bystander. :(

Adv. Galloway continues with her cross-examination of the Defence's expert witness, Dr Antonel Olckers.

Dr Olckers confirming with the court the missing SOP's and what they consisted of.

Galloway asks Olckers about input samples, begins to answer. Galloway agitated by length of answer, Adv. Combrink rises to object

Desai tells Olckers to keep it short but pertinent.

What's going on with HvB's hair. It looks very strange at the front.

Olckers is incapable of giving a yes or no answer.

The court learns a new word, courtesy of Olckers: stochastic; a random probability pattern that may be analysed but not predicted

https://twitter.com/CapeTownEtc

Galloway understands if product used and user wants optimal results, use x procedure. Alternative can be done, but with validation.

Olckers explains stochastic effects to Judge Desai in terms of DNA

Stochastic effects are effects that occur by chance and which may occur without a threshold level of dose, whose probability is proportional to the dose and whose severity is independent of the dose. In the context of radiation protection, the main stochastic effect is cancer.

Olckers says that forensic evidence should be ignored where the DNA evidence is below the threshold.

Desai describes the standard as "stringent tests"

If sample too small, there would be no result? No, Olckers says, stochastic effects means DNA result may no longer hold true.

Aren't you proposing an unrealistic standard for the 21st century? - Desai

Olckers it is not her standard.

"I'm aware of the impact; I can only stand for what is in the scientific text."

Desai: science is a practical art.If it leads to result with some degree of certainty, should it be ignored? Unrealistic standard?

Dr Olckers: I can only stand for what is said in scientific texts.

Galloway says FSL works with samples which aren't perfect.

She absolutely grinds my gears.

"Whatever profile you get is invalid"

Olckers testifies to the validity of samples analysed by the Forensic laboratory

Lt Col Otto says no problem in finding DNA in samples. Olckers says answer found may not be valid.

Desai asks if Olckers can say it's false? She says if not valid, its invalid.Cant make valid conclusion from invalid interpretation.

The validity of DNA results will have a big impact on the case

So shouldn't be used for further analysis? Correct, Olckers says.

But she used these samples to make her calculations on m/f DNA.

Much discussion on the samples at the qPRC state

qPRC

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is used to simultaneously detect a specific DNA sequence in a sample and determine the actual copy number of this sequence relative to a standard.

In real-time PCR, the DNA copy number can be established after each cycle of amplification.

This is useful for diagnostic tests where the cycle number at which the signal of the reaction crosses a threshold (threshold cycle) has been correlated with clinical data (eg, growth of an organism in culture, or the presence of marker genes from metastatic cancer cells in a sentinel lymph node).

And by beginning with a reverse transcription step, qPCR can be used to quantify numbers of messenger RNAs as well. There are many applications for qPCR in both research and diagnostics.
