Henri #VanBreda's application for leave to appeal his triple murder conviction has been delayed as his defence and the State need for time to prepare, the Western Cape National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed.

Originally set to be heard on Wednesday, #VanBreda's application will now be on the Western Cape High Court roll for August 14, NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says.

Thank you JJ and Tortoise for the posts of HvB's sentencing, so thankful for Judge Desai's conviction/judgement, just wish the sentence was much higher to fit the brutal crime. HvB committed the most heinous crime imaginable as his first, how could it could any worse, he should have received a life sentence, imo.
(Having an awful time with this new site and loading pages, cleared cookies etc. :( )

Welcome back Prime. Just to be clear, these were his sentences:

3 life sentences to be served concurrently
15 years for attempted murder of Marli
12 months for obstructing the course of justice

Life sentences are indeterminate and can mean until you die. The ConCourt made a ruling some time ago that all persons sentenced to 25 years up to life are eligible to apply for parole after serving 25 years. The fact that he got 3 x life will hopefully lessen his chances of successfully being granted parole after serving the minimum of 25. It's a clear indication by Desai to Correctional Services that he should remain in prison for a long, long time.

Nice to have you back for the Appeal, shortly:)
Noticed you on Ristevski, a little while ago: pretty exciting at the moment.

Thanks JJ, this makes sense. I sincerely hope he's in prison for a very long time, he deserves no leniency whatsoever.

Hi Tmar, it's all systems go :) , just getting used to circumnavigating around this new site, been extremely slow.

What prompted killer Henri van Breda’s ‘savage and continuous’ axe attack?

This Sunday, in a world exclusive story, 60 Minutes reporter Liz Hayes is given unprecedented access to the Henri van Breda murder files – the extraordinary case of the Melbourne university student who brutally slaughtered his family with an axe in January 2015.

Why did Henri van Breda murder his family?

Neither of the two dogs in the 60 Minutes preview is Sasha.

The du Toits received special permission to take Sasha to visit Marli when she was a patient at a clinic near Cape Town. It was hoped that this would bring a smile to her face and contribute to her recovery. Sasha was a long-haired mixed-breed pooch.

Here’s a pic of Andre du Toit and Sasha on their way to that visit.

But JJ, the dog, on pink lead, as pictured is also not 'a long haired mixed breed': was this the supposed photo, going to visit Marli, or another photo, of a 'non long haired pooch'.
Is this what is being stated? I don't understand.o_O:(
Also, in the promo, for 60 mins, I didn't note the 'long haired pooch': I noticed what appeared to be similar to 'Jack Russells, 'Terriers' or similar, in Henri's arms, from just the dogs faces being visible. o_Oo_O

I originally thought one of the dogs in the promo was Sasha until I noticed the second pooch of the same breed. I deleted the post to delve a bit deeper and found the Pressreader article which clearly states what appears in my post.

The article is clearly referring to Sasha. Further text from the same article says:

"Relatives of Marli van Breda ... continued to visit her at a specialist rehabilitation centre in Cape Town this week. Among them was a special guest - Sasha, the family dog.

... The Du Toits received special permission from the exclusive clinic to bring the dog for a visit. ... The long-haired mixed-breed pooch was led into the clinic on a pink lead".

Personally speaking I would describe that dog as a cross-breed with a "scruffy" coat. If you look at the coat at the back of the collar you'll notice the scruffy looking hair.

Edited to add: Further to the above, the family were murdered on 27 January 2015. The article was first published in the Sunday Times on 22 March 2015 at which time Marli would have been in rehab and there was only one family dog at the time of the murders.

Thanks JJ, I agree, with what you quoted from the article.
I just didn't think the dog on lead, fit the description, although stated this was Sasha.

Thanks, Prime!
I had no idea it was coming up because I don't normally watch tv - but I'll make an exception in this case!

The promo shows the bloody scene.
They may describe positions of the bodies.:(
Also, we may see, Henri sitting outside with Sasha, when Police arrive.
There may use original photos, they may have on arrival, and not what they have shown: Henri with 2 dogs!!!.
This could help me regarding 'long haired pooch'.

'This was a set up': Why the girlfriend of a Perth schoolboy who hacked his parents and brother to death in a frenzied axe attack STILL thinks he didn't do it despite him being handed three life sentences

Henri van Breda, 23, claimed a masked intruder killed his brother, Rudi, father, Martin and mother, Teresa, while leaving his sister Marli fighting for life with bloody injuries to her head, neck and throat at the family's South African home in January 2015.

Henri van Breda's girlfriend 'very confident' murder conviction will be overturned

“His story still always made sense to me with the lack of evidence… We are very confident in the appeal.”

Certainly hope, the Appeal will not succeed.

I told my friends to watch, and am disappointed that loads of evidence wasn't reported, to indicate HvB is telling fibs.
Yep, not much about the evidence presented at the trial but also, not much 'evidence' from the Aunt or HvB's girlfriend to convince anyone that he was set up. The Aunt, Leenta Nell has unusual thinking but I suppose total denial is a safe haven for her, she's accepted he could have killed her sister but supports him anyway, so be it.
When questioned why she had never asked Henri if he was in fact responsible for the axe attack, she declared: “I wonder whether I'm not bothered now whether he did it or not. I want to emotionally support him.”

The girlfriend, Danielle, doesn't give a toss, imo, she won't ask the hard question, she won't be lied to.

Good points made by Susan Galloway in her short interview that Henri is arrogant and he didn't think it through!
DS Marlon Appollis describing HvB's murderous deeds are those of a psychopath and the wonderful Dr Tiemensma, explaining the self inflicted wounds.

Convicted axe murderer 'unable to hurt anything', defiant girlfriend claims

The three part 60 mins interview included in the news article.
