Maryland set to expand gay rights, same-sex marriage

Maryland is poised to become the sixth state to recognize same-sex marriage as proponents say they believe they have enough support to pass such a measure in the upcoming legislative session.

Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley has publicly stated that he would sign a marriage bill into law. Maryland then would join Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C., in sanctioning same-sex marriages.

I try to stay out of this thread due to the fact I don't agree on all said here. Sometimes I pop in just to see how the conversation is going.

Without getting into a big debate, I must say this...
I've seen several posts grouping all "religious people" and "Christians" together as all holding one belief system. That's not correct and a bit offensive.

You are right, Kimberly.

But in fairness, outside the Episcopal Church, which has been debating the issue extensively, one doesn't hear much from Christians who support gay rights. No doubt, the media is largely to blame: it's easier to pose the issue as "Christians v. Gays" and ignore the facts that (a) Christians have a variety views and (b) many gays remain devout Christians.

I don't know if support is the right word or not. But, I know A LOT of Christians who have no problem with it. I'm one of them. How I feel about it in my heart is my business. How I treat others is everybody's business. lol Does that make sense?

I treat everyone the same. It's not for me to judge.

That being said, I do have my own thoughts based on my beliefs. IMO that's normal. Everybody can't feel the same way about issues. How boring would life be then?

In my opinion, Christian faiths or religious faiths (or any other personal beliefs) should be completely taken out of this. The rights for our fellow men/women needs to be respected for who they are. Whether it makes uncomfortable (why, I'll never understand) or not. Every human person deserves the life they have strived for. Who is anyone to say another does not because their choices are not the same as theirs?

We are, or should be without question, all equals walking this world.

Makes perfect sense to me, Kimberly. Sounds like many, maybe most, of my Christian friends and relatives.

Well, it's not marriage rights, but it's another positive step, IMO.

Illinois Gov. signs historic civil unions law

Gov. Pat Quinn, saying it was a "day of history," signed legislation Monday legalizing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples, making Illinois one of about a dozen states that extend significant legal protections to same-sex couples.

The new law will permit both same-sex and opposite-sex couples to enter into civil unions and receive the same benefits, protections, and responsibilities under Illinois law that are granted to spouses. Couples who enter into a civil union will not receive any rights or benefits under federal law. Illinois still does not permit same-sex couples to marry. The law explicitly allows religious entities to choose not to solemnize or officiate civil unions.

'Today is an amazing day'

[snip]

The sentiment was shared by gay rights advocates and supporters yesterday as Gov. Neil Abercrombie affixed his signature to the legislation (the first bill signing of his career) approving civil unions and making Hawaii the seventh state to grant most of the same rights and benefits of traditional marriage to same-sex couples.

Good job, Hawaii!

Good job, Hawaii!

Alas, it wasn't so long ago we thought Hawaii might be the second state to grant full marriage rights.

But this is still a big step in the right direction.

And I think that in Hawaii and in California both, the longer we have full domestic partnership rights, the more people will think of gay couples as "married" and have no problem using the word.

Finally.

There was a huge push here locally prior to the signing with tv coverage and interviews giving examples of how it will be a positive change for the state of Hawaii in that it will bring in more revenue for those same gender couples who wish to have a ceremony here as many "traditional" couples.

I can't say that I agree with the marketing. These couples should be granted the right to lawfully join together ---not just because it will pump more revenue into the state economy.

But at least it was signed. :)

I know what you mean, Kat. I love it that my civil rights have to be justified as an economic benefit to the state (the same argument was used here in CA).

But that's politics for you. Anything that moves us forward, I guess...

Civil Unions in Delaware will be legal beginning on Jan 1, 2012. It was signed into law May 11, 2011!!

Glad to see this! It's taking way too long to happen everywhere, but slow movement in the right direction is better than no movement at all!

Proud to be a resident of Mass on the issue of gay marriage! Looking forward to seeing more states join us soon, I hope!

I love your state, Gardenlady. My daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren live there and am I ever grateful they do! None of them find it the least bit odd that Grandpa Nova and Grandpa Nova's Husband are married in CA.

(I love your state for other reasons, too. It's a beautiful place to visit.)

Nova that is awesome. It will surely be the kids who get things changed for good; they don't have the hangups that adults do, and they recognize in such a simple way that gay marriage isn't an "issue", it's just about love. And the more kids who grow up in places where same sex marriages are commonplace, the more of a non-issue it becomes. Even when I was growing up here in the 80s, long before it was legally recognized, there were always gay couples around who were not in any way closeted, and aside from a few titters among elderly neighbors, none of us kids or our parents ever thought anything of it. So it seemed so ho-hum to me when it was finally legal. The reaction among most of us was more like "well duh, finally!".

It actually wasn't until I'd lived in a few different places around the country that I appreciated that things weren't and aren't like that everywhere. So it makes me even more glad to be back living here. And glad your grand kids, and other couples' children and grandchildren are able to grow up in a place where they can be comfortable and not have it be an "issue" that their grandpa, or mother, or uncle is married to someone of the same sex.

And other than our freak Halloween blizzard, we've even been having great weather here. And we haven't yet felt the wrath of the almighty that I'm sure was predicted for us by some when SS marriage went through. :D So yeah, Mass is pretty cool place to be these days!

I am predicting (hoping!) that Santorum's momentum was solely due to what seems to be a lot of ambivalence to Romney on the right. NH is next, and while they seem pretty conservative fiscally, they have a pretty strong libertarian streak, and so I don't think Santorum's far right stand on social issues will go over well up there. I hope that he takes a big loss there so that the wind goes out of his campaign's sails for when they head south to SC, where his social conservatism will undoubtedly play better, especially if he makes a good NH showing.

Santorum is a threat to big social issues for gays and women especially, so I am really hoping that in NH he goes down in flames. I hope we see Ron Paul make a strong second behind Romney, instead.

I usually vote green or socialist though, so I don't have a horse in these primary races, other than just watching and wishing defeat on the worst of the bunch! :D
