Dagestan??? As in the brutal "Dagestan Massacre" video which shows Russian solders being killed by Chechen rebels?

Wow, I kind of suspect that might be a hotbed of terrorist anger, that is one of the most brutal videos on the Internet (if you look for it do not complain about being traumatized afterwards).

Also, why were they at MIT last night? Were they going there to plant more bombs since I read that they were throwing bombs out of their windows. The older brother was taking an engineer program at some point, IIRC. Maybe he was angry with the educational institutions for some reason. It seems to me that he was lying to his parents back home about the courses he was taking i.e. medical school.

Suspect 1 (older) dropped out of an engineering program at community college to pursue boxing; was hopeful (realistic or not) of possibly competing at the Olympic level for USA. (On a photojournalism boxing blog now locked and private.) He also had a child, which may have tightened things up for him financially--not sure if he was living with the child and her mother, as he was also arrested for domestic violence towards his gf in recent years.

The father was talking about his younger son DT (suspect 2) when he spoke of medical school. Originally son 2 had been studying chemistry; then, apparently switched to philosophy. (Dad unaware of this, most likely.)

I agree - they immigrated here with their parents when they were kids.

Based on the recent statements made to the media by both the father & aunt, I suspect that these two terrorists may have heard a lot of anti-government rants during their formative years.

The Uncle is the only extended family member condemning their heinous actions - and I commend him for doing so.

The father & aunt seem to be only interested in blaming everyone else and I think it reveals their mindset, and may be indicative of the type of anti-government propaganda these two terroists were exposed to as they grew up. MOO

As chikdren, before they came to the US, they grew up dealing with war, corruption, and chaos. Is that nota a hardship?

Guys, there is not a finite amount of compassion or understanding in the world, that we can somehow use up. Feeling compassion for what the two brothers might have been through does not mean we cannot simultaneously feel compassion for the victims who were injured or died.

All of this seems so very weird. These two young guys weren't stupid, why in the heck did they plan an attack in their own town where everyone knew them?

I could see if it was just one lone nutcase but TWO and they were brothers? And the younger one was supposedly so normal and possibly a pot head? Did his older brother say "Hey, let's set a bomb off at the Marathon this year" and the younger one just agreed that is was a good idea?

This is all just so strange especially because they were supposedly so normal a year ago.

My thoughts are for notoriety, reclaiming some power from society that they felt was lost and stripped away by society, and to make social commentaries to the public and their friends. They wanted to be known. They want the fame and celebrity. Some social statements they might have wanted to make are that appearances can be deceiving, hypocrisy/evil exists in all of us, and you think you knew us but you didn't...

Yes, they do have great doctors. However, these people did not have money AND they were living in the midst of some of the best health care in the world and a place with some of the most liberal policies with regard to receiving care one cannot pay for.

I agree and a Senator said that on CNN a few minutes ago, that the father had an excellent Hospital for Cancer People in Boston, so that is a mystery as to why he went back home, and why the older son spent 6 months in Russia, still some unanswered questions.

Strikes me as a bit off too. He's in a city that has some of the finest medical minds in the world and some of the leaders in cancer treatment and he goes to a country he's not even from?

I don't know what the german connection could be - unless his dad was using someone else's personal identification to seek medical help. I've lived in Berlin and personally I'd NEVER want any German medical help (they aren't too keen on pain meds) if I could get around it. I agree it makes no sense but there's probably nothing really to it. Germany is by no means a threat, nor is Russia. I asked someone who does a lot of Cancer charities and fundraisers for people all over the world if Germany has some sorta research going on or better care concerning brain cancer, she said "not that I'm aware of". for psychotherapy they are very astute so .. given that it's brain cancer (and if you've known anyone who had cancer that spread to the brain... it's pretty sad stuff) maybe he went due to the neurology aspect? Or maybe he has family that are cancer specialists or Dr's working there?

RE the driving: It's starting to sound like the 19 yr old brother didn't know how to drive well, i.e inexperienced. Not too uncommon in large cities to never learn how to drive. My oldest hasn't driven a car yet - because we rely on drivers, taxi's, trains etc. Someone with little driving experience and in fight or flight mode would be hazardous on the road and not last too long. More so because they wouldn't know streets and back ways. I don't think he's out of Boston, roads were shut down almost immediately. There's high crime areas and mafia ran sects that he could have fled too but I don't think he has survival skills, so I can't see him hiding long. Eventually he's going to have to come out.
