Maybe the way to do it is to strap the baby in the car first, before the older children...
I did just what you suggest, and it didn't work out. ( I had four children in five years, so it sometimes took a very long time to get all the bigger babies into the car, and poor little baby would be in a hot car waiting while mommy lassoed his brothers and dragged them into the car!) So I, too, loaded my older children into the car before bringing the baby out to the car, and I strapped my children in as I put them into the car. However, by age 4, my kiddos were in booster seats that utilized the car's seat belt for restraint, and all of my 4 year olds were able to undo the seat belt and release themselves. (I actually left one of my babies at home one day because I'd loaded him up, put him into his booster, secured the seat belt, then returned to the house to get the youngest-----after I strapped the littlest baby into his car seat, I got into the driver's seat and left---got to church and the bigger baby was no-where to be found......to this day I cry when I think about that day, because of what could have happened.)
