Since the very start my theory was that this was a crime of passion.

A VERY jealous person killed David and Hannah.

Since Hannah was the victim who suffered the most serious injuries, her face was totaly destroyed (I have seen the horrific pictures of the dead victims) I believe that the killer saw Hannah as the rival!!!

So if the killer saw Hannah as the rival, the killer was obsessed/ in love with David!

I think we can exclude that some random girl, within days got obsessed/fell in love with David, to a degree that led to this horrific murder.

So who then?

I believe it could be David's friend, his traveler buddy, the british guy who left the island a cupel of hours after the murder.

What if this guy is gay or bisexual? What if he through his and David's friendship had developed strong feelings for David?

David was an extremely attractive guy, also very intelligent, funny, warmhearted, and openminded, and who knows maybe this guy and David at some point on this travel had a physical "experience" ? todays youth often experiment sexually.
Maybe this friend of David's believed that it meant something on a serious emotional level, but for David it was just a funny experience with his friend, and when the friend realized that David was making love to a random girl on the beach he snapped into frenzy rage, grabbed the garden hoe and hit David on the head/the side of the head and Davis's back, while Davis was still on top of Hannah (in the sexual act).
When David was gone, he hit his rival in a total frenzy destroying her face completely UGHHH

I do NOT believe that Hannah was raped, I believe that the evidence of sexual activity at the scene only stemmed from the consensus intercourse between Hannah and David.

In the horrific crime scene pictures David is 100% naked and Hannah's bikini-top and skirt had been, bikin-top pulled down to her waist, the skirt pulled up to her waist, so her cloths in a state that in a way could fit David and her having sex.


This theory is of course my speculation only, however I feel, even since the beginning, very strongly that this might have been the case...

or the other way around....

Maybe it was Hannah who was seeing a local, maybe this local had fallen in love / obsession with her... This person see's Hannah leaving the party with David, follows them, David & Hannah are engaged in making out/sex, and it then becomes an attack of rage to see the women this local loves with David. That is why Hannah got the brunt of the facial violence.
All IMO of course.

Does anyone know how long these two were on the island? It is my understanding they were not travelling together.

PHUKET: A British traveller named as Christopher Alan Ware is being questioned again by police investigating the savage murder of two British tourists, Phuketwan learned today from police sources.

DNA samples are expected to reveal today whether Ware is a prime suspect or whether several Burmese remain under suspicion for the slayings of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24.



Ware left the holiday island of Koh Tao yesterday but returned this morning in response to a request from police. Later, he was taken to the beach where the murder took place.

Today brought more unusual twists in the pursuit of the killer or killers.

Region 8 Police Commander Panya Mamen told Phuketwan: ''David Miller's luggage contains a pair of bloodstained pants, which adds to the mystery.

''There was also blonde hair on a mobile telephone police have now located.''

It's understood that Miller and Ware shared a room at the Ocean View Bungalows, where Hannah Witheridge was also staying.

Doctors have been asked to determine whether cuts on Ware's hands are old wounds or fresh cuts. A hoe was used to kill the British travellers.

Another report today, so far unconfirmed, says that blonde hair has been found in one of Hannah Witheridge's hands.

Both bodies are expected to be autopsied in Bangkok today as more than 300 police conduct further inquiries on the Thai holiday island where the two bodies were found on a beach early on Monday.

Police conducted tests and found that sound does not travel far from the cove where the bodies were found because of rocks that surround the small sandy beach.

Phuket detective and forensics specialist Colonel Santi Chainiramai is among a number of police called in from surrounding jurisdictions to solve the murders as fast as possible.

what a gong show... This is just crazy... The poor families will never get the stories straight, will / can true justice ever be served with an investigation so corrupted like this?

THAI police are preparing to arrest a British man over the brutal murder of his close friend and another female backpacker on an island beach popular with Australian tourists.

Christopher Alan Ware was stopped at Bangkok’s main airport with his brother James on Wednesday for more questioning on the slayings of David Miller and Hannah Witheridge at Koh Tao — a day after being told by police he could leave the island.

Initial forensic tests were carried out on the victims late today, pointing to a more complicated struggle before they were hacked to death with a garden hoe, typically used by beachside bars to dig holes for fires on the main beach.

In a further complication, the local police chief suggested there may be a bisexual element to the relationships and crime.

There is evidence both victims had sex either before or after they died, although it is not known with whom and if it was consensual``.

That occurred to me as well at first, except that it was so violent...

Yes, research (and my local restaurant) tells me Thailand is overwhelmingly Buddhist, with Muslims coming in second but at only around 3.4% of the population.

I got a sinking feeling about the police work in this case yesterday when graphic photos of the victims were posted online & when the CCTV image of the couple (clearly a dark haired woman) holding hands was released & purported to be an image of the deceased (clearly a blonde woman).

I wish I could unsee those photos. I can't see a random killer displaying that level of rage, especially in the clear overkill of the female victim, unless the killer had a serious anger problem. I'm not an expert, but I get the feeling it was either a crime of passion (most likely??) or a crime committed by someone with a deep hatred of women.

Then again, where did the hoe come from? Hoes aren't generally close at hand at hotels or touristy beach areas. Is anyone missing a hoe (perhaps it was stolen from a nearby farm or garden?)? Are hoes used in the process of digging holes in the sand for fires (stated in one of the posts above)?

I'm horrified by this crime & its level of brutality.

Testing by forensic scientists of samples taken from suspects was expedited on the orders of the government after the brutal murder of the two British tourists on Koh Tao island in Surat Thani province. Pol Gen Jarumporn said the results suggest there are traces of DNA of two different individuals. Samples were taken from stains on a cigarette butt found near the murder scene. Testing revealed the samples belonged to two people as there were two separate DNA sets. He said they “did not contrast” with the DNA found in the semen.

Bold mine. I'm not sure the butt is significant - presumably lots of people smoke on the beach so it might be totally unrelated - but if it's a match to the semen, it suggests Hannah had sex with 2 people - or had voluntary sex with one and was raped by the other. The statement that the DNA "does not contrast" with the semen is a bit vague though so could well turn out to be totally unrelated.

Not sure how reliable this news source is but more detail than in UK papers:

the stain found on the trousers was unlikely to be blood but a chemical substance. A police officer who asked not to be named said as police investigators were trying to piece together the murders based on the evidence found and the findings from an initial inspection of the victims' bodies they believed Miller was attacked from behind. The victim was also believed to have engaged in a struggle with his assailant. Witheridge, meanwhile, was dragged away from the first attack spot, said the same police officer. The officer said Witheridge did manage to run for some distance but was hit repeatedly in the face with a hoe which suggested whoever attacked her could have held a personal grudge against her.

However, assistant national police chief Gen. Jarumporn Suramanee said two sets of DNA that were found both on Witheridge's body and on a cigarette butt near the scene did not match samples taken from three foreigners and nine migrant workers in the area.

DNA traces from possible suspects could not be detected on Miller's body because it was smeared with his blood, Jarumporn said.

Just a thought....

Thailand isn't a Muslim country. If anything, it's a Buddhist country (almost 95% of Thais are Buddhists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Thailand)

That overkill could be from someone with a hatred of the victim, but it could also be from someone who doesn't know how much killing it takes to actually kill someone -- a first-time killer. Maybe fear was the motive. Either the couple saw something incriminating or were robbed, and the perpetrators wildly started killing them in fear of being found out for the lesser thing. A hoe might be very common around hotels, where the landscaping needs to be maintained. Just a possibility.
