Posting this in full as it gives a good understanding of why they were in the cave and how they got trapped:

Since I got asked by many of my foreigner friends into what, where, when, how and why those kids got stuck in the cave. To make the whole backstory simple let me tell a brief story before the rescue mission started. These are stories that I gather from many accountable sources, but please do not take it all as facts because many minute details are intentionally omitted.

They are the local school boys who often visit the cave on a regular basis. Just like you go to the public park on weekend.
They were going to have a birthday snack party for one of their friend in the soccer team. They asked their coach for permission to have their little party in the cave. The coach agreed to accompany them.

During this time of the year, they thought it was still too early for a monsoon, so the journey began on a bright sunny morning. No sign of the rain.

The famous spot they wanted to go was about 4-5 km. into the cave and it would take them about a few hours of walking, hiking, clawing, descending, climbing to reach it (on dry condition). Parts of the walkway are so small about 15 inches wide and has sudden twists of vertical incline.

During the journey into the cave, little did they know that the storm started to form over and broke out into a big monsoon!! The water began to drip and started to accumulate in the lower section of the cave basin. They had no clue about the storm but noticed the water rise up too fast and going back out through previous tiny pathway seemed an impossible alternative to take.

They needed to find a higher ground inside the cave to survive. The more they wait, the higher the water level. They had no other way but to move forward to get away from the rising flood. Finally they reach their destination, A “Pattaya Beach” spot, but the water kept rising so they fled 400 meters more. They found a tiny dry spot just a few inches high from the water edge, small enough just to fit 13 people!!!

Since they were going to have a birthday party, they brought a few rations with them, including snacks, chips and torch lights etc. They finally knew they stuck in the cave for now till somebody started to notice and make a search for them. Their coach cleverly instruct them to use one torch light at the time, consume just enough ration and lay still to conserve their energy and only drink from the rain drops falling from the cave ceiling, no drinking from the flood water!! During the waiting, their coach taught them "Meditation" so that they could minimise their metabolism and did not crack under prolong darkness.

Unfortunately, their foods supply ran out sooner than expected. Their coach did not eat at all for fear that those boys might not have enough foods for survival. He sacrificed himself without telling the boys.

They waited in the darkness of the cave for almost 10 days, all of them had no idea how long the time has passed. Their sense of time had been deprived. Some boys reported accordingly about hearing chicken coos at the back of the cave or songs being played nearby… Where were those noises come from?? All of those incidents couldn’t be verified since they resided almost at the back end of the cave…

…In the dark, a boy saw a tiny speck of light glimmering under the water….

…A bubbling sound of air bubbles echoed the silent chamber...

...The first rescue team emerged from the water...

...

The link was posted - thank you for posting it here--it was difficult to read on FB and I couldn't copy the text, either.
Easier to read like this on here! -- thanks.

Time for this old lady to lay down for a couple of hours before I have to get up for the dogs and cats. I want to thank you all for keeping me company during this roller coaster of an emotional journey....hugs to all...

OK Porty! I've enjoyed sharing this with you, and really enjoyed your posts! ❤︎

Hey Portabella? Thank you too. I've enjoyed hearing from you. *hugs* Remember: dogs have staff; cats have slaves. ;) And if you own birds it is worse, you're no more than furniture with warm spots. ;) :D

The operation is still ongoing. 11 out of 13 are out. 1 more boy + coach to come. And Also the 3 Navy Seals and 1 medic that was staying with them in the #Thamluangcave. They’re coming home...

Yes, of course! Okay folks, let us hang on a bit more. We don't go home until all the rescuers go home. Right? It ain't over 'til it is over.

We have been told Adelaide anesthetist Richard Harris continues to play central role in #ThamLuangRescue, diving each day all the way to where the boys are trapped to check their condition before clearing them to dive. He only leaves the cave when last boy rescued each day

These divers are just such amazing, selfless people! As are all the volunteers on the ground. I’m glad my kids are still sleeping, they don’t like it when I cry even if it’s happy tears.
