thanks Annasmom, I didn't know anything about him, first time I ever heard of him.

I just CANNOT pass up the statement on Brody..."never worked"..."involved in politics at one time"... This explains alot, LOL

Excuse me for jumping in but I've been reading for hours and first I want to say that my prayers are for Anna and her family and am inspired by the courage and faith of Annasmom and family.

In reference to the notebook--to add my 2 cents and a medical slant to the picture--this is what I've come up with:

APHA--American Public Health Association

ISR--Institute for Social Research

INR--International Health Regulations

WHO--World Health Organization

H&W—Health & Welfare

LIP—Lymphocytic Interstitial Pneumonia

“Control of Communicable Diseases In Man”

To my way of thinking--GW knew he was going to die--hence all the insurance policies. And he might have had AIDS--before it became epidemic--LIP is often the result of autoimmune diseases. And it is clear that he was taking a trip--to Italy?--with Damron? Why wasn't Brody going with him? Did Brody have an AIDS related cancer--Kaposi's Sarcoma? Did G&G have Anna kidnapped (and, perhaps, sent out of the country) and did GW want to take her a picture of her mom? If Brody was sick--it explains where all of GW's money went for surely he wasn't covered under GW health insurance policy. What about getting a better slant on GW--what did his ER collegues think of him?--I have difficulty thinking that a man with the intelligence and perseverance to make it through medical school and work under-the-gun in a busy ER--would succumb to Brody's manipulations--but then again, if he was in love....
Oh, what a web...Good luck to y'all--unraveling it--bring Anna home,
In Awe--bjb

Babiana, it's good to have your input on this, and I know it must have been a marathon job, doing all that reading. It is impossible to know what the ER colleagues thought about him, since we don't know who they were. Other MDs who were friends were agreed that he had very serious mental problems, and one suggested that Brody's "revelations" were the result of coronary insufficiency. This suggestion, of course, provoked an angry reaction and ended the friendship.

Regarding the insurance policies: They were all accident insurance policies, which suggests that Brody had told Waters he was going to die. As far as we can tell, GW was neither homosexual nor bisexual and his relationship with Brody was mentor-devotee. Of course we can't rule out AIDS, but the timing of all this seems to minimize that possibility. Brody had some kind of throat cancer which required a feeding tube, but it is difficult to know anything beyond that. Some of GW's notes obviously refer to patients he was treating, not just to personal matters. This may be where some of the terms come in.

I appreciate your insights and ideas on all this. We have reached a place on the Forum where we're a bit stumped as to how to proceed, so any new point of view is most welcome.

SherlockJr heroically offered to go through all the insurance policies and bank records in the Box From Hell. She took pity on my "Aargh" at the prospect of digging into that stuff once again. What is left now is much more manageable, and I should be able to refine the filing system so I can find stuff as questions come up. Both Doogie and I attempted to make sense of the insurance stuff without much success. If anybody can do it, it's SherlockJr. (On the other hand, maybe there's no sense to be made of it...but we'll find out.)

Goooooooooooooooooooo Sherlock! You can do it! We believe in you!

OMG! Now I see the reason for the emotional reaction when we've asked questions just on the insurance policies! "Aargh" certainly has one too many letters to describe the contents of what came in the mail today. I'll start working on it right away.

Surprisingly, there are only about 20-25 Accidental death policies within the mass of insurance papers.

Every policy listed George Brody, Friend, as the beneficiary. About 5 of the largest policies, GW had written to company requesting GB as Irrovacable beneficiary.

I have to ask. What credit cards did GW have? Did anyone ever get his credit report run?

Remember when every credit card company out there was offering AD&D insurance for next to nothing? That... and supplemental insurance for so much per day paid directly to you.... and anyone with a phone and a credit card would get no less than 5 calls a day? I recall a few of the companies listed heavily telemarketing in the early 80's as I was one doing the calling.

Just some thoughts.

Also in the box are 11 check registers dating from 8-27-69 to 12-25-1981. Later tonite I was going to enter all the information into Quicken or MSN Money to get some reports.

I found this somewhat interesting....

I should say so!

I do not see a date on this receipt. Is there any indication that this was prior to 1/16/73?

The two Georges do not seem like the sort that would be doing any birdwatching with these.

Looking further, I found the account number listed is GW's account number for Gulf Oil credit card. I am currenty going thru his check registers and he had his Gulf CC in 1972. Feb 5, 1972 was his first payment to Gulf Oil. That just killed that thought about the #1 standing for 1971.

Notice that this seems to be a receipt for the return of a pair of binoculars. Dated 3/14. What a perfect way to get rid of evidence - to return them to the manufacturer after it had been used...in January(?). You no longer have the suspicious item and you get your money back. Very interesting...

I believe you are correct Doogie. It does look like a return receipt.

Evidently, Waters purchased the binoculars using his Gulf Oil Card. They must have offered various products for sale with their billing statements where customers could use their card for purchases.

So based on the receipt and the check register that SherlockJr mentions, Waters would have purchased the binoculars sometime after February 1972 (when he made his first payment on the account) and returned them on March 14, year unknown. Unless the purchase of the binoculars was the first purchase on the card 2/72 which he would have had to immediately return them 3/14/72, then the next logical possibility would be 3/14/73. This would mean that he may have purchased the binoculars to observe the farm from the high vantage point on Higgins Canyon Road.

Maybe I am asking something that has been covered before, but since they both died within a short period of time, where did the money from the policies go??? Did GW's family fet it?

The policies were evidently "accidental death" policies, so Waters' suicide would not have qualified for any payouts. Any estate that Waters left would have gone to his mother and siblings (it was probably very small). Brody left $17,000 in a safe deposit box that was not discovered until it had reverted to the State Controllers Office which administers "abandoned" property - only someone who can prove that they are the rightful heir to Brody can claim it. If we could have found the box prior to it going to the state, we had the key and could have used the money to finance the search for Anna (which would have been a delicious irony had it worked out that way).
