Slide being shown now says jury has to believe Crown case is "only rational inference that can be drawn from the circumstances". #badenclay

Byrne says jury has to believe there is real and substantial evidence linking the aspects of the circumstantial case.

You can't join the dots if there's no evidence to join them - defence #badenclay

10:17am: The trial has attracted the largest crowd of curious onlookers and avid court watchers yet today.

The queue to the court building stretched further than 100 metres from the entrance this morning.

The proceedings are being streamed live to two other courtrooms, including the ceremonial Banco Court, which seats 147 people.

Byrne says one fact is that Allison's blood was found in the car. #badenclay

OMG are we in for another soliloquy from this guy - it won't go in GBC's favour as the jury will be asleep before he gets anywhere!

Byrne: you cannot and should not join the dots if there is no evidence to join those dots. #badenclay @abcnews

Allison's blood was found in the Captiva. Fact. But is murder the only rational explanation? - defence #badenclay

David Murray ‏@TheMurrayD 49s
The case relies on circumstance. Such as, he was the last person to see her - defence #badenclay

There is much more circumstantial evidence than this .......

Kate Kyriacou @KateKyriacou · 28s

Byrne says the jury has to believe that the only rational reason for it being there is Gerard transporting Allison's body. #badenclay

Byrne points out there was no blood found anywhere else in the carport, garage, side of the house, back patio, inside the house. #badenclay

Byrne says the blood in the car can't be aged. #badenclay

Byrne says the jury's task is complex and important. #badenclay

There's no blood in the carport, garage, back patio, in the house - defence #badenclay

I think he is going to go through each major piece of evidence separately and tell the jury that it doesn't prove murder.
The prosecution will present that all the evidence taken together proves murder.

No one can say when the blood came to be put there - defence #badenclay

Francene Norton ‏@francenenorton 1m
Byrne: Sure there's blood found in the Captiva but, and it's a big but, there is no blood found anywhere else... #badenclay @abcnews

Byrne says it's not on the balance of probabilities. They have to be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt. #badenclay

Byrne says they will now work through aspects of the evidence. #badenclay

Byrne: The onus is beyond reasonable doubt. #badenclay @abcnews

Defence highlights the use of the words 'either, probably, perhaps' in cross examination, and says it's not enough #badenclay

The bit that was rehearsed ad infinitum to ensure he had the right demeanour .....

Byrne says he will now talk through the evidence, says the jury won't be satisfied Gerard is guilty #badenclay

I don't think this will go very long.

David Murray ‏@TheMurrayD 48s
How did he kill her? Defence #badenclay
You might think the starting point was to prove how Allison died - defence #badenclay
