The Stafford Act is a 1988 amended version of the Disaster Relief Act of 1974. It created the system in place today by which a presidential disaster declaration or an emergency declaration triggers financial and physical assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency[3] (FEMA). The Act gives FEMA the responsibility for coordinating government-wide relief efforts. The Federal Response Plan includes contributions from 28 federal agencies and non-governmental organizations, such as the American Red Cross. It is named for Sen. Robert Stafford (in Senate 1971–89), who helped pass the law.

Congress amended it by passing the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, and again in 2006 with the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act.

Volcano Creates New Land After Lava Fills Hawaii Ocean Bay

“The bay is completely filled in and the shoreline is at least 0.8 miles out from its original location,” said Geological Survey geologist Wendy Stovall. “Vacationland is gone, there is no evidence of any properties there at all. On the northern end of that, there are just a few homes in the (Kapoho) beach lots area.”

Good lord! @CARIIS, I’m reading more about that boiled-dry lake you mentioned. That’s mind-blowing. Mother Nature is both frightening and fascinating at the same time.

Fissure 8 Continues to be "Very Active"

A total of 22 fissures have appeared since May 3rd in Leilani Estates. The eruption has destroyed at least 130 homes, and lava has covered more than 2,000 acres of land.

Just relentless stuff

the flows are like 15 feek high at places just imagine a two story building of lava creeping over what was where you lived

since onset this equals covering Manhattan in six feet of lava

summit continues to expand and fall into the crater blocking it up not good only thing that can happen is a blow up

now saying they think around 12 dead not confirmed however

9900 earthquakes not a typo sorry

Laze…increasing winds…Pele’s Hair and other lightweight glass fragments “continue to accumulate in Leilani Estates”…lava fountaining continues to occur from Fissure 8…at the summit a small explosion occurred, the energy equivalent of a 5.6 earthquake…ash plume 10,000 feet…we expect the next small explosion in 24 hours… still some incandescence…600 homes swallowed…Kilauea is one of 5 volcanos on the island of Hawaii…the (new) ocean delta extends a mile or more…

Kilauea Volcano Just Swallowed An Entire Parking Lot In Hawaii

All of the magma that is feeding those rivers of lava has been draining out of Halema‘uma‘u, Kilauea's summit crater, causing the walls of the crater to collapse and fall in on themselves. The result is a destabilized and widening crater that is reshaping the summit and portions of the popular park.

The expanding crater has also taken GPS stations down, forcing the USGS observatory to set up new temporary sensors.

This is both horrific and fascinating to watch. I miss the 24/7 camera that was on fissure 8. Since that went down there really hasn't been anything to replace it with the type of view that had. Again, horrific but fascinating.

I just found this thread. I watched the civil beat livestream until they were forced to flee. It has been heart-wrenching for the people and the animals in that area. A great place to keep up with daily events is hawaiian tracker on fb. It is public so you don't have to have an account to check it out. Fabulous photos ,videos and accounts from locals. Some amazing animal rescues too.

More sad news... the home where civil beat, cnn and joseph anthony filmed from escaped the lava but burnt down by fire caused by a spillage of the lava . No definitive word on whether Rusty the lava rooster was rescued . If not RIP Rusty.
