GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) -- Rutherford County Sheriff's detectives are back in Tennessee after investigating a 16-year-old cold case in Goose Creek.

China Videon, 16, went missing on Oct. 19, 1999, and was legally declared dead several years ago.

Investigators said she was seen in the home of two men who worked as managers with her at a TN grocery store. She had been seen previously by her mother at a nail salon and then buying groceries from the BiLo where she worked.

Detectives said her car was found abandoned in the summer of 2000 at an apartment complex in Nashville. They said the groceries were still in the car.

One of the suspects, known only as "T.J.," has been living in Goose Creek for more than a decade and has reportedly told people about killing Videon officials said.

Investigators said the other suspect, "Chris," lives in Alabama.

RCSO officials said they've been operating covertly for almost a year but now they hope someone will come forward with information on the crime since they do not have enough evidence to make an arrest.

"At this point we are closer than we ever have been," Detective Steve Kohler said. "We want to make sure our case is sealed up and a great case to prosecuted. There's some things we want to look into a little further."

Chris was supposedly China's boyfriend and TJ was Chris' best friend.

The detectives working on this case were recently interviewed about cold cases in their department. They spoke a little about China's disappearance. No new developments mentioned though.

Another family he is dedicated to helping is the Videons.

China Videon disappeared Oct. 19, 1999, when she was 16. Her mother, Suzanne, last saw her daughter that evening at a beauty salon at Jackson Heights Plaza.

Cold case files are never closed until they are solved, Goodwin said. They do sometimes go “inactive” when all leads dry up, but new leads reactivate the investigation, which is what happened in the Videon case.

The three current suspects live in three states, which means travel for the detectives, which means money is being spent.

“Yes, it costs money to work these cases,” said Kohler. “It’s expensive — but what value do you put on life?”

Midstate Mysteries: No trace of China Videon more than two decades later
The latest news article I could find. Back in 2015 this article Arrest 'imminent' in China Videon's disappearance said an arrest was imminent but that never happened. The first article from 2021 does not mention TJ (supposedly her bf) and Chris (the boyfriends friend). I wonder if they are still suspects or not.
Post #61 has the relationships flip flopped. Chris being the boyfriend, TJ being Chris's best friend. However, if an arrest was imminent years ago, it sounds like they didn't quite have enough to make it stick. If they could find her, or some DNA from the crime scene, that would help solidify it all. Did either of these people have access to heavy equipment, an ATV, jeep or anything to go out in the woods?

China Videon

China Videon’s disappearance on October 19, 1999 has haunted investigators for decades. Videon was 16 years old when she vanished from a hair salon in Murfreesboro.

According to police, Videon’s mother knew something was wrong when her daughter stopped answering her pager. Detectives put up Videon’s photo around town, but without the aid of today’s technology and social media, it took some time to get any leads in the case.

Missing teenager case puzzles Rutherford County detectives for 2 decades

The first big break was when her car was found abandoned in an apartment complex in Antioch in June 2000. However, police said no foul play was evident from the car. As time has passed, police said they have not stopped looking for information.

It’s believed that Videon may be in the company of an adult male. Videon, who was last described as 5’3″ tall with brown hair and blue eyes, would have just turned 40 this year.
