On July 16, 2015, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire on two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He first committed a drive-by shooting at a recruiting center, then traveled to a U.S. Navy Reserve center and continued firing, where he was killed by police in a gunfight. Four Marines died on the spot. A Navy sailor, a Marine recruiter, and a police officer were wounded; the sailor died from his injuries two days later.

In December 2015, following an investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James B. Comey said that the attacks were "motivated by foreign terrorist organization propaganda."

Six months after July 16, texts, emails and records reflect day's chaos
January 16th, 2016

Editor's note: The tweets, texts and records in this story have been reproduced as they originally appeared. Comments in italics are recollections of the events.

A terrorist struck Chattanooga six months ago today.

Armed with two assault rifles and a handgun, the gunman killed five men in a calculated rampage, striking two military sites on the morning of July 16.

The bullets sent civilians and military members scrambling for cover. One Marine fled with his 6-year-old daughter in his arms. Others jumped a fence to escape. Some Marines ran back into the fight. Others quickly ushered civilians away from the bullets. Police officers shot and killed the gunman. Ambulances raced to the scene. Medical trauma teams mobilized.

The city stopped and watched with horror.

Four U.S. Marines fell that day: Sgt. Carson Holmquist, 25; Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, 40; Lance Cpl. Skip Wells, 21; and Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, 35. Mortally wounded in the attack, U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, 26, died two days later.

Here is a minute-by-minute recounting of July 16 — the attack, and the pain and resilience that followed.

* * *

10:45 a.m.

Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, 24, opens fire on a military recruiting center on Lee Highway.

"The gun was huge. It was really, really loud. It was numerous shots. Just, 'Pow! Pow! Pow! Pow! Pow!' I was in shock. I just froze. I just sat there and watched. It was over in a couple of seconds." — Gina Mulé, waitress at Toscano Italian Grill

10:51 a.m.

The Hamilton County 911 Center receives a shots-fired call from a military recruiting center on Lee Highway and creates a computer-aided dispatch card to start the emergency response.

"I knew the shooter would have to switch weapons, change clips or reload. After about 7 to 12 seconds, I heard the break in fire and yelled to [another Marine] to run." — Gunnery Sgt. Camden Meyer

I am new to the forum, but I've never really seen this event discussed since that summer. I live in Chattanooga and I graduated high school with Abdulazeez's older sister. An old friend of mine was friends with his other older sister; their mom taught her how to cook Arab food (friend was half-Syrian but abandoned by dad).

This was absolutely shocking to me. I didn't know his sister very well, but my old friend said the dad would often talk about how much he loved America according to her. The sister I graduated with was just a class acquaintance, she didn't talk about her religion at all and was very quiet, but so smart. She started wearing a head scarf when she turned 18 our senior year, but that was the only indication of her beliefs. Though, I know the next year, post 9/11, my friend was called sand n-word at school, so I bet the family received the same racist treatment, probably worse since they were also Muslim.

Anyway, when I learned his name I had to double check it was the same family because I just couldn't believe it. I was at work when the news broke; I was on the other side of the river from the shooting scenes, but we were all on edge.
