This guy’s gotta be high on a bad batch of PCP or something, right?

(I’m being facetious, mostly.)

I didn’t watch any of the live video footage because:

A) I firmly believe that watching live streams of violence perpetuates the problem

&

B) violent videos (quite literally) make me sick to my stomach and my brain will replay the graphic images in my head on repeat for days on end.

But… one news article said most of what he uttered during the live streams was incoherent and/or didn’t make any sense.
I’m with you. I do not want live violence videos to take up space in my brain.

So he didn't serve the full 3 years?? The charges were reduced or ?? Maybe someone will explain fully as I'm confused.

In February 2020, Kelly was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, court records obtained by Heavy show. A grand jury indicted on him on those charges in June 2020.”

He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in April 2021 and was sentenced to 3 years in prison.

I don't know there really should be some algorithims that stop this horror from unfolding live on social media. I think Social Media Companies all of them have to do this. IDK maybe these companies have to be a heck of a lot more aware of what individuals are posting Live. IMO also these companies need to do surveilance on live feed and just make it a contractual obligation that all live posted videos will be monitored. They have to do something or this will occur again.

I'm quite confused too.

The situation shut down much of midtown Memphis for hours and ended around 9:30 p.m. with the arrest of 19-year-old Ezekiel Dejuan Kelly in Whitehaven.

The motives are still not clear, though Ezekiel Dejuan Kelly has a violent past and a extensive rapsheet for being so young.According to court records, a February 3, 2020 incident led to Ezekiel Kelly, then 19 years old, being charged with first-degree attempted murder. He was also accused of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, employment of a firearm with the intent to conduct a serious offense, and aggravated assault.

Apparently, he was indicted by a grand jury for attempted first-deg murder and additional charges in early 2020. But later pleaded guilty and was only sentenced based on the aggravated assault charge. (still confused, lol)

The U.S. Sun can confirm Kelly has charges from 2020 including criminal attempt of first degree murder, aggravated assault, employing a firearm with intent to commit a felony and reckless endangerment.

Court documents from Shelby County show he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and the other charges were dismissed.

On April 6, 2021 he was sentenced to three years in the Shelby County Department of Corrections after he was tried as an adult.

He was ordered to pay fines and costs amounting to $12,389.50 - and had agreed on a payment plan.

Kelly was sentenced to three years but was released on March 16, 2022.

Authorities had reportedly issued a warrant for Kelly's arrest on Wednesday morning stemming from a February 3, 2020 incident.

I agree 100%. Where I live (SF Bay Area) we see dozens of suicides from our bridges every year and they never even appear in print due to concerns about triggering Others to repeat the behaviors.
Even worse to trigger homicidal rampages.

Also? TBH, I saw a lot of folks sort of cheering and laughing and making gestures and
“b-r-r-r-r-a-p” sounds (like those made by an automatic weapon). That was disturbing, given the nature of what was unfolding. I really fear a lot of people are just inured to this kind of violence.

This is needed!
With radio, there’s a 3-second delay so they can bleep things. FB Live needs a LoNG delay before a live video posts. As you say, there must be some way to identify and block violent posts before they go up.

What’s just as concerning is the number of people who repost/share these violent videos. So many people desperate to be noticed for something they do online, no matter what it is.

It’s a very sad week.

Based on other confusing arrest/warrant reports and rap sheets floating around out there on SM over the last few hours, I have a feeling The Sun is mixing some separate reports together and that’s where that bit of “info” was generated. I think the arrest warrant today was for the first shooting this afternoon… but I could certainly be mistaken.

The rest of your excerpt from the article seems like it’s been substantiated by other news sources though.

Kelly, who lives on Hitchcock Drive in Memphis, was the subject of an arrest warrant on a first-degree murder charge issued on September 7, 2022, according to Shelby County court records viewed by Heavy.

According to Fox 13 Memphis, three people were shot in the city throughout the day; a man was shot and killed at a BP gas station at 4:35 p.m., another man, 24, was killed on Lyndale Avenue at 12:56 p.m., and a woman was shot on Norris Road, suffering critical injuries.

There were videos on Facebook showing Kelly walking into an AutoZone store at 4100 Jackson Ave. in Frayser and shooting an unsuspecting man. The victim reportedly survived his injuries after being hit in the intestines and had surgery. He has another surgery in two days.

Another victim was seen by a Daily Memphian reporter and photographer on Poplar Avenue near Auburndale. The victim’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the death are unclear at this time.

so he did less than a year
good job officials

I just watched an innocent man publicly executed in an Autozone.

Yet prison executions of convicted murderers are made private.

One of these things doesn’t belong.

jmo
This will in no way help with the trauma of viewing that, but it may provide you some small comfort that the person you saw shot (inside Autozone) was reported to have survived his injuries.

Yeah, yet another reason why social media is evil imo. Pics of women breastfeeding their babies get automatic bans, live streaming mass murders though are totally fine

Kelly was charged with first-degree murder early Thursday.

“Many families were shattered tonight,” Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. said at a news conference early Thursday.

The identities of the victims have not been released. It was not immediately clear if the suspect knew any of the victims.

Strickland said Kelly was released from prison less than six months ago. He said the suspect had been charged with attempted first-degree murder, pleaded guilty in April 2021 to a lesser charge of aggravated assault, and was sentenced to three years in prison and served 11 months. Court records show Kelly was 17 when the incident occurred.

Online corrections records show a release date of March 16.

"If Mr. Kelly served his full three-year sentence, he would still be in prison today, and four of our fellow citizens would still be alive," Strickland said Thursday morning.

Facebook parent company Meta said that it removed live video related to the incident, and that it was in contact with Memphis police.

There are at least eight crime scenes, Davis said, and police are still investigating. "There could potentially be other locations, there could potentially be other damage in other places," she said.

"This has been a horrific week for the city of Memphis," Davis said after Wednesday's shootings.

"These evil actions show why truth in sentencing is a must, and we should do all we can to make our city safe," Strickland said. "We must unite around this principle and stand up to the challenge of violent crime in our city."

Praying and sending positive energy for the entire Memphis community. Eliza Fletcher’s murder was horrible and now this…

I hope the city can come together with people supporting each other so something positive can come from these horrendous events. It‘s going to take time to heal. May there be light and peace.

Isn't this absolutely crazy?! At least there is plenty of evidence for trial.
