MHO, Whom ever came up with the (corn bread mafia) theory was totally out in left field. As someone who is a fan of the history surrounding the CBM and that era. that dog don't hunt. JMO.
Agree. Say what you want about the Cornbread Mafia, including doubt it exists/existed, none of them good old boys were stupid. Just one of the reasons few people are familiar with even the name. CW and DW would not be in that circle.

Summer we are still thinking of you!

I am of the current theory that Summer was left to sleep in the car while her guardians were nodding off in the trailer, and that they were too late to get her out and get help in time.
(I used to negate this theory due to no cadaverine detected but they could have found her just before that chemical process had begun)
I think drugs were involved, making a cover-up their only hope to stay out of prison/keep their family together.
Moo
The 'Piece of Candy' always bothered me. That's when everything went down Ben Hill Road For Summer. MOO.

I believe the day was exacerbated by a sticky seatbelt that little Summer couldn't release herself.

It always struck me, in CW's account of the day, her specificity -- helped Summer with her seatbelt and she popped right up.

And what's that rule-- let sleeping babies lie (just not in hot cars)? Warm day at the lake, warm car, too warm zip up outfit.... if she left Summer in the car because she was sound asleep... carried in the groceries... helped Grandma carry hers in, help adjust her knee brace, lose track of time...

Truth: CW unbuckled the seatbelt.

Summer didn't pop up.

That statement about her popping right up...hit me too. Red Flag

From the article…bbm

In July 2021, the Tennessee Department of Children's Services said Summer's brothers were removed from Wells' family home. Don said he and Candus recently signed over their parental rights.

Wow! They signed over their parental rights! That's a legal thing. Who brought on the proceedings? I'm assuming the state. But they could have themselves, signed over their rights.

To me. signing over rights is a big deal. My ex son in law signed over his rights to his daughter from a prior marriage to get out of the financial responsibility as he was entering into a new marriage and subsequent child, my grandson. And he was exercising visitation rights all the while until he gave up his rights for a new relationship and child. I thought lowly of him and felt sorry for his daughter. We remain in touch with his daughter who refuses to have anything to do with him even tho he reached out after she became of age. He also gave up his right to my grandson. I breathed fresh air that day! My grandson will have nothing to do him with either.

They may have signed over their rights to avoid a court proceeding for termination. No sense going through the hearing if they had no defense and no hope of complying with a reunification plan. If they still live out of state. travel expenses for court appearances may have been prohibitive, as well. IMO.

This seems like a good possibility I'd not considered before. As an East Tennessean, I know how cold the water is in the creeks and lakes and how sleepy children get after going swimming in them. That would account for warming up in the track suit and going to sleep.

The main problem I see with this is that the parents had to take care of the body. So, that's three adults and two children likely knowing. Since LE doesn't appear to think the parents were involved . . . I'm not sure everyone would have kept the secret this long.

My own "solution" came after Jose (was that the name of the man who stayed in the home while Don was working out West?) said his first thought was that somehow she'd gotten out the basement door. IIRC, he said she was just wild with running and impossible to catch and that was why the door was usually blocked with a couch (memory here, so may have been something else).

After reading his comment, I've gone with the above theory that Mom perhaps drank or took some drugs and fell asleep. That's why she and Don worked to protect her in order to keep the boys. If Summer got out the back door and did run wildly, she could have fallen and been badly injured or killed. We know the search parties continuously discussed how difficult the terrain was. So, I've thought of deep ravines, rocky outcroppings, caves or holes, old wells or cisterns that Summer could have fallen into. Even if she weren't killed or knocked unconscious immediately, a small child's voice is not likely to have been strong enough to have been heard any distance.

I've often wondered if Don should have waited until winter and had the fire departments in the area do a controlled burn so all the land would be exposed and they might find something that was hidden by the summer vegetation. I've considered that if it had been my child, I would probably have been compelled to make the land searchable in order to at least know whether she was there or not.

Interesting. Both cases bleed into one another per Det. Pruitt. So much for the boys being kidnapped by CPS. MOO

I don't think something happened after they all came back from town, otherwise, the boys would have said something by now. Unless, she left the house, ran off and/or got hurt by herself - but still they would have noticed that she left. The boys were definitely old enough to remember and articulate if a parent, or one of them hurt her. I think they would have said if they didn't see Summer come back from town as well. They have been gone long enough from the parents to where they would be comfortable telling what they know. Had to have been done in secret or she was kidnapped/sold or she ran off playing and got injured out in the terrain.

When the boys were removed Don admitted it was because he had “flipped out,” and had been drinking and “everything else.”

During later interviews he said it was for the safety of the boys due to strangers coming onto the property. Eventually he dropped the part about his behavior and the story morphed into DCS kidnapping the boys.

Initially the parents seemed to make an effort to fix up the house and correct safety issues but that was interrupted when Don was caught in a DUI and sent to jail. After that there’s little information to confirm whether they continued with any court ordered conditions.

It’s understandable that the removal of the boys was stressful but ultimately it was up to the parents to complete all items on their parenting plan.

Right. The fact that CPS main objective always is reunification, combined with the fact that Det. Pruitt said "Both cases bleed into one another speaks volumes. Thankful the boys were saved. Justice for Summer Moon Utah Wells. MOO

The boys may have been oblivious to everything - including screams - if they were playing video games or otherwise glued to a screen. JMO.
