There's no mention of her carrying a purse or back pack. I can't imagine her carrying a comb on the hike. Is it possible that she asked the young man to carry her comb in his pocket for her, and that he pulled it out of his pocket when he got back to the school and to his car, without giving it any more thought. To a typical high school teen, it would be just a comb, not worth fussing over.
I don't know how old you are, but in the 70s we strove to carry combs in our back pockets; the kind with handles that would stick up out of our pockets - the bigger, the better. It was just a fashion statement thing, but hair, and the combs for it, was a thing.
Those who had curly hair would have afro-pics in their back pockets - or stuck into their hair. Normal sight for me in those days.
I can soooo imagine her having a comb.
