WARNING ... very graphic videos

Clearest video I have found of the accident happening. you can slow it down or go frame-by-frame easily. Devastating! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T8v_kzTI8ok

There was a young girl being carried away from the ride by a woman wearing a white sleeveless top. She gently laid her on the ground and the girl was not moving. I wonder what happened to her. She appeared to be younger than the listed injured.

In 2013 the Ohio Dept of Agriculture Amusement Ride Safety Division had 11 employees (and spent $1.17 million on inspection)

These 11 employees are responsible for inspecting two large parks, Cedar Point and Kings Island, as well as ALL the county fairs. That's a lot of rides to inspect "regularly" (not to mention any "surprise" inspections that are suppose to occur). Maybe this is typical for all states??

And, I wonder if there are more or less employees now?

Are they engineers?

I just can't bring myself to watch the video but I have to ask: the still photo of the two people on the ground, still strapped to their seats...the person's right leg is at a terrible angle. I am not sure how it's possible to survive that.... I am not a medical professional of any kind but it just looks so horrific...I can't even imagine.

I wondered the same. She did look very young. I wonder if she fainted on the ride due to the trauma?

ETA: Later in the video, someone said she was breathing.

Link to photo?

ETA - Nevermind. Found it. Also saw it in a video.

I would imagine that could be the deceased. But I don't know because I would have thought it was one of the people who flew through the air that would have died.

Sounds like Ohio Dept of Ag is now contracting out inspections to private corporations. Not a good move. There's no way to certify whether these people have adequate knowledge or up to date experience in these kinds of inspections. No way to hold them publicly accountable when they make mistakes.

It seems pretty obvious there's been a major failure in the inspection of these rides, especially since they just began operating within the last few days.

What a shame. Those killed and injured will likely not receive much, if anything in the way of compensation for their deaths, injuries, loss of work, medical costs, etc. There was a lot of discussion on these topics last year when the little boy was killed at the Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, KS.

Here's hoping the Columbus Dispatch does some good, in depth investigative stories about this industry, lack of safety and oversight, etc. the way the Kansas City Star did.

ETA: Adding from further reading, this was opening day for the state fair, so it seems likely its the result of poor inspections. MOO Perhaps the next time a carnival sets up these rides using private contractors for inspections, the governor and all the members of Ohio's General Assembly should test them personally before letting the public on.

I'm so sorry that Tyler has lost his life on what should have been a fun day out. It is terrible, 18 is no age his family and friends must be devastated. Are there any updates on the condition of the injured?

Rest In Peace Tyler

I think it is disgraceful the fair is reopening today could they not have closed it for one day as a mark of respect? It will be interesting to see if charges will be filed in the coming days. It is horrendous the tragedy has been filmed I was really hesitant to post it but did so because it helps understand what went wrong. At least it could be used at evidence in court should charges be filed or negligence claims for the person who died and those seriously injured. It's a miracle that several people weren't killed.

There's probably a lot to consider when deciding to close something of this magnitude for a day.

I know I just felt it was a little insensitive to open the next day given a young man is died and people are fighting for their lives in hospital. At least the rides are shut. I hope they get to the bottom of how it happened.

I understand, I don't know how anyone could go there now and enjoy themselves.

I agree. Whoever has to make that decision would be damned, either way. Not an easy spot to be in. What happened sure makes the whole "fair scene" seem ridiculous, in light of someone dying, and others being injured. Still, there are those who have a stake in the Fair, whether it's financial, or through entries, or plans they've made far in advance to be there. Someone (involved in the Fair, not here!) is always going to not be happy.

Now that sounds like a good idea!!

In New Jersey....

The company that operates the Monmouth County Fair shut down "The Claw" on Wednesday night after learning the Fire Ball ride had malfunctioned in Ohio.

A state inspector on Thursday officially shut down "The Claw" ride and it will remain out of service until its manufacturer and inspectors give further guidance.
