Oscar Pistorius: South Africa gears up for its 'trial of the century'

(CNN) -- He was one of South Africa's favorite sons, an amputee track star who defied all the odds and sprinted into the hearts of millions during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She was a staggering beauty with the brains to match, a law graduate and model whose star was on the rise.

That could possibly explain the prickly, itching sensation South Africa feels after being exposed to the Oscar Pistorius contagion for 18 months, through 47 court days. All of it, the drama, the tragedy, the showmanship, his spectacular fall from grace, the gallantry of carrying and crying over a bloodied corpse, the fake devastation, showed how he is better than the rest of us.The conclusion of the sentencing procedure is probably not the last we will hear of and see our champ as an appeals process is sure to ensue. He will continue to contaminate and assault the national consciousness with his charmed existence. By RANJENI MUNUSAMY.

Brought over from last thread, this amazingly written Daily Maverick thought piece savages the Pistorius "contagion" and South Africa's next evil: "chequebook justice" and the "corrosive" narrative to "paint serial offenders as innocent victims."

"He projected himself as a figure of moral virtue, while firing guns in public places, and asked others to lie for him about it. He abused his friends, abused the court system and abused our tolerance. He thrived on his megalomania and believes now that the world wronged him, rather than that taking a human life comes with consequences."

I thought this was funny!

#OscarTrial #OscarPistorius What can South Africans learn from Oscar?
1. pee with bathroom door open
2. Pay for best lawyers

muttering to self ((now I really want poached eggs & hollandaise!))

Good Morning from Vienna, this is my Frühstück (breakfast) today:

Final sentencing Day today!
one more (hopefully not many weeks long) break after that and this long trial is finally over and Judge Masipa will reach her sentencing verdict....
I really hope OP gets to spend some time in prison for taking Reevas life! (and as I already said I am not 100% sure he intentionally killed her in a rage)
He needs to reflect on his overall behaviour imo - and if he gets away with another slap on the wrist other incidents like this may happen.

Thanks so much K.T for posting the quotes from that article! I'm having such strange computer problems at the moment, it's the most I can do to just get the link here.

I've been trying to think of the word I wanted to use to describe that Maverick article and I've just remembered - excoriating. That's what it is.

OMG that looks decadent!!

Steak egg & hollandaise on left - what's on the right???

Kedgeree - spicy rice, fish and eggs.

Oh now thats made me feel hungry - my Special K this morning is not going to last me til lunch!

Eish (the go to SA slang ;)) thanks for bringing the article to our attention.

Also, much gratitude and respect for all your updates and transcribing. Brilliant! Trying to be here as much as I can because this trial is thankfully, finally, ending. Yippeeee.

But for those who pop in and out, it's the most fun following WSer's hard and frequently funny work on trial days...thank you Zwiebel.

I know yesterday that there were suggestions Judge Masipa may reach her decision Tuesday, but does anyone know how it will be announced? Will court suddenly be called into session, or will it be announced the day before that sentencing will be taking place in the morning, anyone?

Aww, thanks. I was looking through my posts yesterday and almost weeping at how my spelling goes south when I'm transcribing - I only spell right when I can see the words, but I can't type without looking at the keyboard. And the SA accent makes me keep writing the Dutch double aa's, which is very peculiar! :)

ETA: lol, or when I'm looking! :)

Good morning at 09:14am in Germany!

Don't worry Zwiebel. Your posts are invaluable. Thanks for your dedicated work on the thread from which we benefit. It does not go unnoticed.:loveyou:

Defence goes first today I think, then state. Mitigation/aggravation factors.
