Oscar Pistorius: South Africa gears up for its 'trial of the century'

(CNN) -- He was one of South Africa's favorite sons, an amputee track star who defied all the odds and sprinted into the hearts of millions during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She was a staggering beauty with the brains to match, a law graduate and model whose star was on the rise.

Good morning all from a blue sunny autumn day in the Balkans. I'm a bit nervous so can imagine how all the participants are feeling at this moment. Anyway, here's hoping for a 'good' decision by M'lady and if not, an appeal from the State. I'll just repeat from the closed thread a couple of tweets to get us going.

David Dadic @DavidDadic
The only way this matter doesn't carry on is if Osacr gets a long enough sentence to keep the state appeal at bay & he accepts it. Unlikely.

#OscarTrial if he receives a custodial sentence, the Defence is expected to appeal. BB

was sentencing scheduled to start at 830 local time?

If he gets 8 years...even if the last four are suspended (with him on probation) I will personally feel that some kind of justice has been done for Reeva. It's not enough, but it will do. Four years incarceration for a 27 year old will feel like a lifetime.

What's making me really nervous is that he'll be granted immediate bail and will go home to Uncle Fester's luxury home tonight.

It really is time for him to start paying for what he did.

In case you didn't see it, JudgeJudi - I just mistakenly attributed your OW thread to Voltaire. Then realised what I'd done.

Apologising here, in case you missed it there :)

Good morning/afternoon/evening from Bonnie Scotland!

Somebody posted that if he got any kind of prison sentence, he'd be handcuffed virtually immediately so I do hope he doesn't get preferential treatment as far as that's concerned too. The Steenkamp's at least should be given the satisfaction of seeing his photograph beamed around the world and 'going down'.

#OscarTrial Reeva's cousin Kim Martin and her husband just arrived at court. BB

Brenda Wardle:

1. The recommendations for correctional supervision must deal with limitations & rights of movement, employment and domestic arrangements.

2. It remains to be seen to what extent #GerrieNel went in rubbishing the reports of #Vergeer & #Maringa. #PistoriusTrial

3. If #JudgeMasipa rejects the reports & the recommendations therein, then correctional supervision ito of 276(1)(i) & (h) can't be imposed.

A few questions:

- Do the lawyers find out the verdict before JM proclaims it?

- Does OP find out too? or is it really a bombshell she drops right then and there?

- Will we ever know the truth about certain elements, post-trial (when it seems more people are interviewed etc.)? Like where Frank went? What about those jeans outside? etc.?

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before but does anyone know, off the top of their heads, how much time he would serve before being elligible for parole if he was sentenced to, say, 8 years with 4 of the 8 suspended? Would he be out after 2 years or 4? Thanks in advance and, if you want to make me feel better, please tell me it's at least 4.

Strapped in.

Good morning all.

For once I get to watch the trial live. ( And even though I am middle of a house move I can't miss this due to packing and removals!)

Here's hoping for something better.

A heavy weight on Masipa's shoulders now - when she was being given the subtle warnings by Nel she looked quite teed off BUT here's hoping she has realised the error of her ways and she does something truly positive and meaningful.

This is the first trial I have ever watched and it hasn't been pretty!

No
No. Bombshell.
No. No.

THIS IS FROM PANDAX on previous thread
"Sentence more than 2 yrs (not life)

court can fix its own choice of non-parole period, up to a maximum of 2/3 sentence
if no such period is stipulated in the sentence, eligible for parole after 1/2 of sentence
if 1/4 of sentence has been served and less than 5 years incarceration remains, parole board can refer a case back to court to consider conversion to a community sentence with supporting evidence

Sentence less than 2 yrs

eligibile for parole after 1/4 of sentence

Special sentence option available to courts

begins with prison
after 1/6 of the sentence automatically considered for correctional supervision by the parole board (no referral to court required)
5 yrs max sentence

Sentence of correctional supervision, no imprisonment

can only be imposed “after a report of a probation officer or a correctional official has been placed before the court”
3 yrs max sentence

(Parole is considered automatically at first eligibility, it does not need an application from the offender. If there is a partially suspended sentence, it is the direct jail term only which is used to work out the minimum detention period. If parole is granted, the partially suspended sentence does not replace the remainder of the direct jail sentence, they both run their full course.)"
