There was an expert on the BBC who said that the Pistorius clan have said all the way along that they wouldn't accept any prison sentence. That's quite disgusting.

Any idea where we can send them our apologies? They have such a hungover sense of entitlement from the worst days of apartheid. As an ex South African I can pick it up all the way from Sydney.

I'm going for a lie down in a darkened room now .. and make sure I cover that annoying LED light with a pair of jeans ..

With all attorneys saying no appeal including the family attorney I can't help but think the sentencing was pre-arranged between all parties before judge M's ruling. (for whatever terms were arranged) IMO

OP should be really thankful for his lawyer. 5 years (with the possibility to be released early) is a very good outcome for OP.

I don't actually think it's just his defence team that's been behind this .. remember what Shane13 used to say 'this one runs deep' .. and he was right, it does.

The Pistorius family didn't seem shocked at all. No screaming out, no gnashing of teeth, no fainting. WTH?

In fact, no one really seemed shocked.

I would have expected way more reaction from OP and his family. Weird.

Goodnight/morning/afternoon all. See you at the appeal (a man can dream can't he?).

Telegraph has a live camera pointed at the jail… not much happening there at the moment though :-)

The two sentences togther make no sense 5yrs for ch 3yrs suspended for 5yrs for gun charges..so in plain english ..
I send you to jail for 5yrs for ch...in them 5yrs i sentance you to never misuse a firearm ...hang on mylady im in jail already how does one misuse a firearm there...
Makes no sense..

Spot on. Even with their Christian values they must hold that OP deserved a punishment that suited society rather than what they wanted. Just because they do charity work doesn't equate to being charitable. The whole lot of them come across as self serving.

Mandy Wiener's tweeted that OP will remain in the cells for another four hours (until 4pm SA Time), until he's transported with the other prisoners.

Yes, certainly everyone seemed to know, didn't they .. you usually get that sharp intake of breath thing when the sentence is handed down, but it never happened this time .. nor did it when the verdict was delivered either (that was probably known to all parties in advance, too, imo).

I know how you feel, I thought he'd walk. Sad I am happy with that. Perhaps the OJ trial is why, and Oscar, coupled with his family, is so much larger...than life. MY LADY has balls, said with respect.
RBBM

I believe, were that true, she a) wouldn't have dismissed nearly all of the State's evidence out of hand; b) would have sentenced him to more than five years total (Um. There was a child at the table beside them at Tasha's. A child ffs!) - not to even begin to mention the loss of Reeva's life to a perpetrator with a clearly illustrated history of impulsive and irresponsible behaviours; and c) wouldn't have been nearly so narrow minded and misguided at chalking up a relationship that showed warning signs of possible emotional abuse to the fickle ups and downs of an anywhere near normal relationship.

She wins no points with me.

Is the judge supposed to give a minimum sentence? Whats the point of just a maximum when the minimum is what really matters?

Both june and Barry have been shown saying they are "satisfied" -- classy family. Pistorius family members are ignoring questions.

They're probably just sick of it all.

Nothing's going to bring Reeva back, and that's all they care about.

Family press conference will be taking place in the court. OP still has not emerged yet. 3km drive to prison. There will be a police escort.

The feeling of lawyers is that the DT will not appeal conviction or sentence.

I think he took a lot of heat for being honest about the error in law Masipa made in her verdict, and is now bending over backward to give her credit where he feels credit is due.

Today's sentence was intelligible, at least, and consistent with her (erroneous) judgement.

I think her reasons for the sentence imposed were pretty good in that she examined all the relevant issues to determine an appropriate sentence. She compared the precedent cases quite well to this case, but when it came to the actual sentence for CH she should have given him more jail time and a minimum non parole period. As she said it was close to dolus eventualis so she she should have sentenced him to something closer to the mandatory sentence for such a crime.
