Just tuned in to live stream. I'm new to this case so admit to knowing only few details. Hoping to catch up today. A question: Did Officer Dean identify himself as police officer before shooting Atatiana Jefferson, or did he only say "Hands Up"? TIA

No, neither of them (Dean or Darch) identified themselves.

I watched the direct and cross of the defendant and the testimony of the child witness. I feel the child witness was influenced by others to say that the victim didn’t have the gun up like he said immediately after the incident. The fact that there was someone in the gallery gesturing to him during his testimony and that he had been saying she held the gun UP all the way until he took the stand speaks volumes IMO. He looked extremely uncomfortable when the questioning got to that point in direct. There was a very visible difference in his demeanor when that question came up. He also said he’s never talked to anybody in his family or the family lawyer about this incident. Again, I’m incredulous.

I think this was clearly self-defense and the defendant should be acquitted. I think the victim was pointing the gun at him and at that point he’s justified in shooting. The cross exam of the defendant did absolutely nothing to dispel self-defense. Again, I didn’t watch the whole trial. But the prosecutor did not contest during cross exam that she had the gun up. And the child witness said the gun was up immediately after the incident.

He may very well get off scot-free because of your exact reasoning. If that happens, there is something seriously wrong in our society when a cop trespasses, lurks, and frightens a homeowner and then shoots and kills them when they merely try to protect themselves from the trespasser, which they have every legal right to do.

If she had shot him she would’ve had every right to do so as well. Because she had every reason to think it was a burglar. However, he wasn’t trespassing. If this was an actual burglary in progress she would’ve wanted him there doing exactly what he was doing. He was responding to a burglary in progress call. He didn’t announce himself per general protocol for a burglary in progress. He had a good faith basis for being there - investigating. It was a terrible sequence of events. But he did not murder her and he wasn’t reckless.

Had she shot him, she'd more than likely be in jail right now. She did not know he was a police officer. Since he didn't ID himself she knew him as a trespasser. End of. The responsibility for this terrible sequence of events lies with Dean and only Dean. If it is true that this is police "general protocol", then whoever came up with this horse#%^ general protocol is at fault as well.
ETA - also, the fact that he was responding to a burglary when it was a welfare check? That person is at fault as well. I am predicting a hung jury based on our seeing this 180 degrees differently from each other, being both very reasonable people. This is such a sad case.
