If I understand what this expert is saying, I don't quite believe his testimony is telling the whole truth.

It sounds like he's wanting us to believe that your cell phone will not necessarily be connected to a tower that's geographically closer (barring congestion in usage), and that just makes no sense to anyone who has ever used a cell phone. He mentioned Connecticut, and my phone will NEVER ping a tower in CT from my home in Texas. There may be some information that is internally ROUTED here there and elsewhere, but that would seem to be answering a different question and using a different set of data records.

Or if he's saying that you can't tell from the records WHICH tower noted is the one being connected to, then I would wonder why not. Aren't there records that would sift out that, from the extraneous? And if so, why not use the records that tell you what you want to know, rather than the ones that don't?

JMHO I believe the State can call Rebuttal witnesses . Also JMHO there has always been controversy over pin pointing on Cell Towers because they do swithch for multiple reasons. Interesting to watch I guess if your not involved. GPS is different than Cell Tower Pings IIRC. And technology 2014 is different than now. The records should show which towers pinged off of by some code jmho

IMO we are looking at two completely different things. The pings prosecutors used are regular "handshakes " between the phones and the towers. Our phone pings when we send or receive messages, initiate or receive a phone call and even when our phones are not in use but are powered on. This ensures that we always have a coverage and a tower to go to when we receive or initiate a call or message.
This witness is talking about another sort of record, which contains the routing of data. To data traffic one needs towers who can send and receive data. Which is why he conveniently "forgot" to add the rest of the 4G towers to his map which are towers with the real "handshakes".
I hope the state can clarify this.
