While Narumanchi, who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, didn’t work at Children’s Medical Group, police say he’d been at the office just last week to apply for a volunteer position. Narumanchi, also a pediatrician, was reportedly rejected for the role.

“We feel like his terminal cancer probably played a large part in whatever occured in his life and what was happening yesterday,” an APD officer said Wednesday. “But we don’t know why he targeted this particular business.”

[..]

The original call came in at about 4:30 p.m. as doctors and nurses ran from the scene. The department said some people in the area were evacuated. They did not give any information on how many people were involved in the incident. SWAT was called, and set up a perimeter.

[..]

KXAN crews on scene reported SWAT could be heard giving commands over a loud speaker or megaphone to the barricaded person, trying to communicate with them. They identified them as a doctor when they spoke to them.

“You dedicated your entire life to helping people who cannot help themselves by working with those terminally-ill newborns,” hostage negotiators told the doctor, who was their suspected gunman.

KXAN’s Jody Barr provided the below video of the communications from negotiators, which are loud enough to be heard in nearby blocks.

Dodson, 43, was held hostage inside her office for hours before the shooting Tuesday evening, Austin police said in a press conference Wednesday morning. The suspected shooter — another doctor named Dr. Bharat Narumanchi who did not work in that office — turned the gun on himself after killing Dodson, according to police.

Austin police released their identities at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Police said Narumanchi’s family was considering hospice care for him.

[..]

“Some of the people in the crowd found out” the victim and suspect were deceased as a press conference occurred, leading to an audible gasp from the crowd during it, police confirmed.

Attempts by hostage negotiators to reach Narumanchi failed. Jody Barr, of KXAN-TV, wrote on Twitter that a female Austin police officer used a megaphone to “appeal to the doc’s emotions, mentioning his family (who are on the scene) and his two dogs. Also mentioning a female doc also inside who APD said has spent her life caring for children and asked the male doctor to think about that.”

He also wrote that Austin police mentioned the male doctor “working in California and Florida” and said he’s a “good man” who has performed “noble work.”

This is so tragic for both families.
Such devastation.
I wonder if it was a brain tumor that affected the thinking of this very ill man, or the depression that could come with such a dire diagnosis. The families no doubt have many questions left to grapple with while in absolute agony over this loss. May they find some sense of comfort and peace in their pain.

What a terrible tragedy. Reportedly, the shooter and suspect were about the same age -- early 40's.

I'm speculating BN came to the Austin area for treatment and/or to be near family since his last practice was CA and FL.

Regardless of his physical health, he was obviously mentally unfit to be working in any capacity with children during his last weeks of life. If he was in denial, being rejected as a volunteer must have pushed him over the edge.

It will be interesting to learn his actual diagnosis.

Condolences to the family and friends and patients too.

A doctor had terminal cancer when he burst into an Austin, Texas, hospital late Tuesday, killing another physician and himself, police said at a briefing Wednesday.

Police identified the suspect as Dr. Bharat Narumanchi, 43, who had a practice in California and once interned at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan, and the victim as Dr. Katherine Lindley Dodson, also 43.

Police responded to Children’s Medical Group in downtown Austin around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Four hostages had been released when police arrived, the department said.

Dr. Lindley Dodson killed in Austin hostage situation, shooting

[..]

Looking for work after recently arriving to town from California, Dr. Bharat Narumanchi walked into the offices of the Children's Medical Group last Friday and inquired about an unpaid administrative job, according to witnesses and police statements. He spoke to staff members about a recent diagnosis for Stage 4 metastatic cancer and articulated his desire to volunteer in the final three to four months doctors had given him, according to a staff member.

[..]

Four days later, Narumanchi returned to the office, only this time with two duffel bags and two firearms that he used to hold five employees at gunpoint before killing one of the office partners, Dr. Lindley Dodson.

[..]

"Dr. Dodson never had direct contact with this man until yesterday," said Victoria Ishaak, who was working in the office when Narumanchi showed up. Ishaak, who does billing and handles the front desk, said she was surprised when Narumanchi showed up at around closing time, remembering him from days earlier as the doctor who had stopped by to see if the office had any work for him to do. She said, "It took me a few minutes to realize he had a gun." [..]

"They were released because they were not a doctor," Ishaak said. "This guy did not want anything to do with someone who was not a doctor."

[..]

The shooting continued a history of violent or erratic behavior alleged against Narumanchi. In 2012, he was charged with domestic abuse in Hawaii, and the case was later dismissed, court records show.

Court records also detail a contentious child custody battle between Narumanchi and his ex-wife.

In one court filing, Narumanchi comes across as angry and frustrated in seeking to gain full custody of his daughter. He described his ex-wife as "a hapless person from her childhood," who "decided to marry me, a born U.S. citizen and thus gain what she coveted and dreamt of — the U.S. citizenship that eluded her when she lived in the U.S. as a student."

snipped by me
Sounds like this is more than just the severe depression or physiological effects on the brain of terminal cancer then. He appears to be a grudge collector by nature who, at the end of his life, felt he had nothing to lose this time. JMO

I completely agree.

I speculated he desired suicide by cop but when he kept a "doctor" as his hostage, it was clear he was bent on releasing his entire collection of insults on Dr. Dodson. Perhaps in his mind, the last female that he believed turned him down...

Such a waste and tragedy.

I have Stage IV cancer, and I think about the best way to spend my final days. There are some doctors who continue to practice medicine until the very end. His intention sounded noble enough, but he was not able to follow through on his intentions.
