I am not talking about favoritism. I'm talking about the separation of church and state that was not respected by a judge, who is employed by the government. I don't care what the belief is here, I care that it happened and it's wildly inappropriate for her position.

The government that has "In God We Trust" on money?

Am I mistaken or was that Bible given to her by Botham’s family? (Yes, the Judge physically handed it to her)...

She could do tremendous good when the anger subsides, I agree
She has done and is doing tremendous good. I am not sure why her good works would need her anger to subside. Her son was killed. The DPD tried to blame her son for his death. They covered things up. Her anger may never subside until substantial change occurs. She doesn't need to help the Dallas community. The community needs to come together to cure its issues---every person, every color, every stripe.

I have watched many trials...some very very sad...I guess I am more comfortable with a judge keeping a more low profile and not showing so much emotion. Often during the trial she really showed her feelings and while hugs for everyone after (not just one side) I have never witnessed anything like this. Is Texas that different?

Yes......we are that different......and unique and special
Don’t Mess With Texas

I think the judge recognizes that it is a tragedy on both sides. There are no winners here. This is not like a typical case where there is a clear act of malice involved. Basically it is a mistake that led to someone dying.

A sentence should serve two purposes, firstly to act as a deterrent by imposing a penalty for the act, and secondly to remove an otherwise dangerous or disruptive individual from society. It is quite clear that the second part does not apply to Guyger, so only the first part should apply. Therefore a lighter sentence is entirely appropriate.

Even 10 years is overkill in this case IMO. She will be punished no matter how long the sentence is, but what purpose does it serve to keep her there for that long?
Would you feel the same if it was your son she murdered? Or “manslaughtered?”

That was fantastic. What an amazing young man. And we finally really see AG showing true emotion. Love, and forgiveness is so much more powerful than hatred. It looked like that poor girl really hasn't had a hug, and needed one.

Her defense team didn't even touch her shoulder when she was convicted of murder, but her victim's brother gave her a hug at her sentencing hearing. Wow. Where is my tissue? That was amazing. I bet that there wasn't a dry eye in that courtroom.
She’s literally been walking free and able to get and give hugs every single day since she murdered a man, except for last night when she finally had to go to jail. But her victim is dead and gone, no more hugs for him.

Caribbean music played from neon-lit speakers as the sun set outside the Dallas County Criminal Justice Center on Wednesday night.

The music, and the crowd of about 50 people listening to it, were in honor of Botham Jean and the island of Saint Lucia, where he and his family are from.

Activist Dominique Alexander opened up the rally by talking about how many people in the crowd had marched for justice “too many times.” He called Guyger’s sentence “a slap in the face.”

He also berated Dallas police, specifically citing Chief Renee Hall’s statement that the department would investigate allegations made during testimony in the trial. Hall spoke at a live-streamed press conference at 6 p.m. at the Dallas Police Department.

“There was testimony as to allegations of tampering with in-car video cameras,” Hall said at the press conference. “There was failure to render aid during a use-of-force incident, a shooting, and multiple other things that came out in that trial. And so we’re not backing away from those things. We have to first find out what, if any of those things have merit and then move forward.”

Allison Jean, Botham Jean’s mother, said her family saw corruption in the investigation of her son’s death. While talking to reporters after Guyger’s sentencing, she said there was contamination of the crime scene, and Guyger had been poorly trained by the Dallas Police Department. The family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and police department.

Activist Omar Suleiman also spoke at the rally.

“If you are going to amplify the grace of Brandt Jean, then you better amplify the voice of his mother, who said only a few minutes after that that we need to continue to seek reform of the Dallas Police Department,” Suleiman said. “We do not see grace and accountability in contradiction.”

Allison Jean said the Dallas Police Department needs to train its officers better, and that the city of Dallas needs to “clean up inside.”

Dee Crane was invited to speak as well. Crane’s son, Tavis Crane, was fatally shot by Arlington police during a traffic stop in 2017.

Crane compared her son’s death to others, such as Michael Brown and O’Shae Terry.

“You don’t give us a choice,” she said about police. “You give us a sentence.”

I think that AG's continued comments about being exhausted and overworked from a 13.5 hour day have played heavily in this case. That has liability ramifications.

I would have no problem if all police officers could only work 8 hour shifts, with no overtime pay, unless directly approved by 2 supervisors. However, the police officers union would have a lot to say about this issue.

I don’t care if she was tired or not. Someone says she was tired. Someone says she was distracted by texting. I just put myself in this poor man’s shoes. He is in his house. His castle, you know. By law, he has the right to shoot the intruder. Instead, some mindless idiot parks at the wrong floor, then takes a wrong apartment for her own and shoots the tenant. She’s off duty, so common rules apply to her. Including unwarranted use of the gun. Such an ugly story.

After delivering a stirring victim impact statement to Amber Guyger, Brandt Jean, the younger brother of Botham Jean, asked Judge Tammy Kemp if he could hug his brother’s killer.

For a moment, Kemp appeared to have no idea what to do. She looked at the sheriff’s deputies scattered around the courtroom. Security had been impossibly tight during the trial, and Guyger was now a convicted murderer. But Kemp granted the young man’s request.

After stepping off the bench to comfort the Jean family, the judge walked over to Guyger, still at the defense table. She bent low and spoke in the young woman’s ear. “You understand?” the judge said, barely audible.

The judge appeared to be overcome in the moment, and left the courtroom. She returned a moment later, a small Bible in her hand.

“You can have mine,” the judge said to Guyger. “I have three or four at home.”

She then began to counsel Guyger. The pair were talking low, barely audible, just the two of them. “This is your job,” the judge said, opening the book.

The judge mentioned John 3:16, saying this will strengthen her. Guyger nodded her head.

“You just need a tiny mustard seed of faith,” the judge said. “You start with this.”

Guyger embraced the judge, who hugged her back. Guyger whispered something.

“Ma’am,” the judge said warmly. “It’s not because I’m good. It’s because I believe in Christ.”

“You haven’t done so much that you can’t be forgiven,” the judge told her. “You did something bad in one moment in time. What you do now matters.”

As Guyger left to begin her 10-year prison sentence, the judge let out a deep sigh, turned, and left the courtroom.
