Criner has a lawyer now who has worked on other high profile cases:

From the same link, another case at the university, not yet known if there is a connection to this case.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — University of Texas police continue to investigate a burglary and possible sex assault reported April 1 at the Jester Center dorm located at 201 E. 21st Street.

According to the UT crime blotter, a female student reported Saturday morning her phone had been stolen and she was possibly sexually assaulted. She told police an overnight guest was no longer in her room when she woke up in the morning.

In light of the recent homicide UT freshman Haruka Weiser, which occurred days after the possible sex assault, some are asking whether the two are related. UTPD could not comment as they are both open investigations.

We have learned his defense attorney is Ariel Payan. He’s represented two high profile capital murder suspects in the past – Mark Norwood and Brandon Daniel. Payan couldn’t tell us much this weekend when we talked to him. He said he has not met with Criner enough to release a statement.

the two referenced case results:

Brandon Daniel was found guilty of the murder of Officer Jaime Padron and sentenced to death by injection http://kxan.com/2014/02/24/sentencing-phase-begins-for-brandon-daniel/

mark Alan Norwood was found guilty of the murder of Christine Morton and sentenced to life in prison. DP was not an option given the jury. http://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/mark-alan-norwood-found-guilty-of-christine-mortons-murder/

I doubt this is connected. Sounds like the woman had an overnight guest in her room. So I presume someone the woman at least knew?

It's seems vague whether or not the guest is the accused, but I have noticed a conspicuous absence as to what happened to Haruka's cell phone. It sounds like they're saying it emphatically wasn't at the crime scene, but they make no mention one way or the other as far as what was recovered from Criner.

I'm not clear on something - was Haruka walking or riding her bike, and Criner was on foot? Then the bike seen with Criner in the video was Harukas? TIA

The bike was not hers. It is believed to have been stolen from before if I remember correctly. He had her computer and bag.

This is the only article I could find that states the phone was in the bag, not sure how reliable it is. jmo

The bag, the affidavit notes, contained her laptop computer, her phone, an extra jacket and school supplies.

That's what her roommates say she left with, not that they found those items upon apprehending Criner. With Criner they mention the laptop and a school notebook and don't say anything either way about whether he had the phone on him.

Has a motive been determined for this crime yet?

EDIT: never mind; obviously not.

Campus members plan to walk Weiser's last steps Monday

In a walk along the path slain University of Texas student Haruka Weiser took the night she died, members of the campus's community plan to remember the Theatre and Dance freshman with flowers, candles and banners Monday afternoon.

The walk will begin at the F. Loren Winship Drama Building -- where Weiser was last seen April 3 -- and end at Waller Creek -- where her body was found April 5.

Organizers said the message they want to send is to, "Stop the violence against women."
rbbm.

I have no idea if the pink bike was stolen or not and neither can I find a previous owner of it. Perhaps his sister gave it to him. We don't know.
What I do know is what I see in the published "Affidavit For Warrant and detention", which, IMO, is the summation of the facts of the case as we know without additional speculation.

http://static.lakana.com/media.fox7...Meechaiel Criner Affidavit_1165273_ver1.0.pdf

In it we read that after the discovery of her body (page 1);
"As investigators continued the investigation..." (page 2);
"they observed a suspicious black male ride up on a red or pink woman's bicycle..."
" as the suspect returned to the location on his bike, the figure of a female dressed in all black and looking at her cell phone could be seen walking toward the alumni center.
As the figure passed the suspect and continues toward the bridge, the suspect watched her..."

There is much more contained in the affidavit which is well laid out as to time and details.

Her laptop was found in his room at the place he was staying at.

Yes, the question was what happened to her phone since it's said it wasn't at the scene of the crime and they only mention Crider having her laptop and don't say anything about the phone being in his possession.

Former teacher speaks out. http://www.fox7austin.com/news/local-news/121106279-story

Mick Criner, the student just arrested for murdering the UT student, was one of my students until a few days ago. He is extremely mentally ill but he was undiagnosed because he was bouncing around the foster child system. He was abused as a child and abused within the Texas foster care system. I don't know what help is available for Mick but he needs help. I had extensive conversations with him on an almost daily basis and he wrote about his past in some assignments in my class. Everyone is going to want to hang Mick but he is mentally ill and he wasn't being treated.

What about the phone pings? Did the police look into her phone pings? Did they find the phone?

When will this country stop burying its head in the sand concerning mental illness?

Font bold etc not me !! moo

In terms of legal insanity, it, IMO seem as if our socicety remains stuck in the 1950's insane asylum "mode". They make it a yes/no deal. The bible of the of the field, (DSM-5 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder
s) used by every mental health provider, and every insurer in the nation is 991 pages! Yes,991 pages of diagnosis!!!

Mental illiness is not a yes/no deal, IMO. Until our society makes some serious changes in how we look at mental illiness our soaring mass shootings, raod rage violent stuff is going to continue to expload IMO

Our system says "is" or "isn't". It is a far more complicated entity than that, IMO
