I would guess he was trying to make shoes fit that were much too large, but over 6 feet tall and size 12 shoes seems like a normal combination. Very strange detail! Jmo
That’s what I was thinking too. Even on the shorter end of the estimate, the shoe size isn’t absurd.

I can’t imagine being able to put on eight socks on my foot. Like, think how thick eight socks would be. Dress socks maybe, but…?!
 
Also, am I reading the listing correct, that he was found not wearing pants?
 
Thank you - I guess in my head I thought these were underwear.
I wonder if he was wearing them as swim trunks & maybe his actual pants were placed elsewhere/not recovered.
