Accused El Paso gunman is deadliest surviving mass shooting suspect in American history (with clip)

Oct 11, 2019

"EL PASO, Texas - Of the 18 deadliest mass shootings in the United States, seven mass shooters committed suicide and another five were killed by police, according to CNN....

The ABC-7 I-Team has an in-depth look at the other five trials....

....a Texas judge has granted a change of venue for the accused shooter in the Santa Fe High School shooting outside of Houston. The trial for Dimitrios Pagourtzis will not take place in Galveston County. Prosecutors in that case cannot seek the death penalty, or even life without the possibility of parole due to the fact that the suspect was under the age of 18 when the shooting happened. Pagourtzis was 17 when police say he opened fire at Santa Fe High School, killing ten people. The judge says the change of venue request was granted due to the publicity of the shooting. ..."

Judge issues gag order in Santa Fe High case

October 22, 2019

"SANTA FE, Texas - Channel 2 Investigates has learned a gag order was issued in the case involving charged Santa Fe High gunman, Dimitrios Pagourtzis.

This development comes as the court consider the issue of Pagourtzis’ competency.

In August, Pagourtzis' defense team asked the court to have their client’s competency evaluated by an independent expert. In that motion, defense attorney Nicholas Poehl stated he does not believe Pagourtzis is competent to stand trial. Earlier in the year, court documents stated the defense will also likely employ an insanity defense at trial.

Prosecutors confirmed to KPRC the independent evaluation is complete, but could not comment on the results because of the impending gag order. Poehl said the gag order also prevents him from commenting.

Prosecutors will now have their experts conduct their own evaluation of Pagourtzis’ competency, which is expected to take 30 days to complete. After that evaluation is complete it is unknown how the case will move forward. Poehl has previously said there is the possibility a competency trial will be needed to determine whether Pagourtzis is competent to stand trial on capital murder charges.

The case is scheduled to go to trial after the first of the year in Fort Bend County. It is not yet known whether the issue of Pagourtzis’ competency will impact that timetable. ..."

Texas teen charged in mass shooting to get psych evaluation

Oct 23, 2019

"A judge has ordered a third psychiatric examination of a teenager charged in a mass shooting at a Texas high school last year to help determine whether the former student is mentally competent to stand trial....

District Court Judge John Ellisor on Tuesday ordered psychiatrist Dr. Victor Scarano to complete an examination of Pagourtzis, The Galveston County Daily News reported. Scarano was hired by the district attorney's office....

Poehl argued in August that Pagourtzis' mental health had deteriorated since his arrest and that he had no understanding of the legal proceedings.

No competency hearing has been ordered. The next pre-trial conference is scheduled for December...."

Texas teen charged in mass shooting to get psych evaluation

From Jan. 2024
It’s been nearly six years since a Houston-area high school student gunned down eight of his fellow classmates and two teachers.

It likely will be at least another year before Santa Fe High School shooter Dimitrios Pagourtzis, now 23, stands trial.

A judge in Galveston County last week ordered that Pagourtzis, who has been confined to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon since November 2019, remains mentally incompetent to stand trial and will be recommitted for up to another 12 months to continue receiving restorative treatment. Pagourtzis is charged with capital murder of multiple persons as well as aggravated assault of a public servant for his role in the mass shooting on May 18, 2018, when 13 people were injured in addition to the 10 fatalities.
