I was just today thinking about what’s often called America’s Golden Era of Domestic Terrorism: The 1970s.

Though, obviously, kids weren’t the main target. Today is something more sinister.

It isn’t bad parenting. It isn’t “THEM.” This problem is about US. It’s up to us to fix it.

IMO, it is not only about the easy availability of guns, it is the whole gun culture where owning a gun is somehow tied to freedom and being American.

yes, I know the article says other players bullied him. So why go to the Art Classroom? Why not go to the gym or football field?

Maybe it was the closest to the door he entered; the easiest to access. Which makes me curious as to the school’s layout and the shooter’s path into and through the school. At least one resource officer was there. Wonder if another entrance had added levels of security, too, like this armed guard who was shot. [emoji853]

ETA: Or if the suspect shot the officer on the way into the school? Ugh. That could somewhat explain the seriousness of the officer’s injuries.

Because I mentioned him before:
John Barnes was the police officer critically injuried on the scene. He was shot with the shotgun and wounded in both arms (I would imagine chest too, IMO).

“For 23 years, John Barnes worked for the Houston Police Department, patrolling the streets of city’s southwest side, and later hunting rapists and pedophiles.

But his most dangerous day came four months into his new job as a school police officer in Santa Fe, when gunman opened fire in the town’s high school, killing ten and critically injuring Barnes.”

SANTA FE, Texas – The suspected shooter arrested after a rampage that killed 10 people at Santa Fe High School this morning used guns owned by his father and had planned to kill himself, Gov. Greg Abbott told reporters in an afternoon press conference.

The shooter, who police identified as 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, used a shotgun and a .38 caliber revolver owned by his father. The high school junior was charged with capital murder and jailed without bond.

"I have no information at this time whether the father knows the weapons were taken," the governor said.

If Dimitrios Pagourtzi was going to commit suicide, why shoot up a school?????????????????????????????????

His plan was to kill himself after the shooting, only he didn't have the "courage" to kill himself.

It is amazing that people are willing to spend billions on armed guards and security measures but they do not want to pay teachers ( how many die in these school shootings! ) , pay for referendums, pay for smaller class sizes, pay for counselors and mental health specialists at schools, pay for after school programs, or pay to fix buildings.

We pay thousands per prisoner but do not want to pay to make schools better.

And I am not interested in hearing about throwing money at schools is a waste. Private schools can cost $40,000 a year or more for tuition. I guess more money for private schools is deserved.

My mind was wandering about this, and I thought of a blog I was reading earlier about the rise of violence in *advertiser censored*. Made me wonder if there was a link there, obviously there's been an increase in school shootings that correlates with the rise of the internet, maybe it isn't notoriety or social media, but something else...?

ETA - if it were related to *advertiser censored*, that could theorise a reason why shooters are teen males

School superintendent salaries need to be cut. What makes them think they are worth a six-figure salary? Are their decisions really worth a fortune? My guess is no.

And seeing this latest shooting happened in Texas - maybe instead of putting tax dollars towards football fields on public school property, use some of that money to keep schools safe.

Tell that to the school supers in rural districts who literally do just about anything and everything needed, from janitor duty to substitute teaching, to bus driving, groundskeeping, to making sure everything runs on budget and safety protocols are maintained. No exaggeration.

IMO children are not being raised to have coping skills.
Not that I'm a perfect parent nor claiming I'm doing things correct, but I don't coddle my children and when there is an incident at school I don't make a huge fuss and run to the principle and demand my child be treated a certain way. I basically tell my kids some kids just suck and to ignore them and to not react back at them. Both my older children 13 and 14 have dealt with bully's and it's not that I don't take it serious but I want my kids to be strong enough to deal with it and not let it devastate them. We have dealt with death, molestation, abuse from their bio dad and many other life challenges. But we deal with them. I don't know this kids story or why he did this but it seems it all stems from how they are raised. Not blaming parents either it's society as a whole IMO.

All resentment building up in them and they have a tipping point.

If you are talking about school resource officer, he was shot in the elbow.
"Officials with the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston said Friday afternoon at a news conference that Barnes was shot in the elbow. He was listed as stable after surgery."

I honestly could not love your post more. You nailed it. I have been saying the same thing to my friends. Kids have NO coping skills. And no social skills. The fault lies with US, the parents. Nothing will ever change until we accept responsibility for our failures. But people don't do that. They play the blame game.

It seems like it gets worse and worse. More children are coddled too much. That is bad.
