FORT HOOD SOLDIER FOUND DEAD IDENTIFIED, CAUSE UNDER INVESTIGATION

Pvt. Mejhor Morta, 26, was found unresponsive July 17 in the vicinity of Stillhouse Lake.

FORT HOOD, Texas — Fort Hood officials released the name of a soldier found dead July 17 near Stillhouse Lake as Pvt. Mejhor Morta, 26, of Pensacola, Florida.

Pvt. Morta joined the Army in September 2019 as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle Mechanic and had been assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since May 2020.

I'm so broken over the fact that there was another death at Fort Hood. They haven't released an official COD yet, but it will be interesting if this is another foul play case, or if he unfortunately took his own life. My heart goes out to the Morta family... I hope there are answers soon.
 
Officials: Fort Hood soldier believed to have drowned

BELTON, Texas — Authorities said Wednesday that a Fort Hood soldier found dead last week near the Texas Army base where he was stationed is believed to have drowned, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

A preliminary autopsy shows the cause of death of Pvt. Mejhor Morta, 26, to be consistent with a drowning, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

It marked at least the third time in a month that a Fort Hood soldier’s body has been discovered, but there is no indication the deaths are related.

Family remembers soldier from Pensacola found dead near Fort Hood

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The family of a soldier from Pensacola who was found dead Friday near Fort Hood, Texas is remembering him Thursday.

Pvt. Mejhor Morta, 26, was found unresponsive near a lake last Friday.

Investigators from the Bell County Sheriff's Office have stopped short of calling the circumstances of Pvt. Morta's death suspicious -- saying it's consistent with a drowning. But it requires further review from the medical examiner.

The body was found by a fisherman along the edge of Stillhouse Hollow Lake Dam about 20 miles away from Fort Hood where he was stationed.

Most of Pvt. Morta's family is in the Philippines, but he was most recently from Pensacola.

His stepfather Lance McLarrie says Morta was a man of service and determination.

"It was shocking," says stepfather Lance McLarrie. "He had his goals set and he had his future ahead of him. He was really doing good. I was surprised."

McLarrie says Morta dreamed of being a Marine. He was assigned to the U.S. Army 1st battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment since May.

"There's definitely foul play here," McLarrie added.

US Army officials announced Tuesday that the body of another Fort Hood soldier has been found, marking the third time in a month that a corpse related to the Texas base has been discovered. bbm

Pvt. Mejhor Morta, 26, of Pensacola, Florida was found unresponsive July 17 in the vicinity of Stillhouse Hollow Lake, around 15 miles from the Fort Hood base, officials said.

Stillhouse Hollow Lake is a reservoir located in Bell County that's managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Fort Worth District.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Department, who is investigating the incident, is waiting for preliminary results from an autopsy before releasing any further information, Maj. T.J. Cruz, spokesman for the department, said.

Officials have not said whether the death is considered suspicious.

'The Black Knight family is truly heartbroken by the tragic loss of Private Mejhor Morta,' Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of 1st Brigade 5th Cavalry. Regiment, said. 'I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.'

Morta entered the Army in September 2019 as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle mechanic.

Since May 2020, he had been assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, according to a statement from Fort Hood.

Morta's awards and decorations include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Congress Investigates Fort Hood Following Soldier Deaths

Congress will launch an investigation into sexual assault, disappearances, deaths and the leadership’s response at Fort Hood after 28 soldiers stationed at the U.S. Army base in Texas died this year, two subcommittee leaders announced Tuesday.

According to data from Fort Hood officials, the 28 deaths include five homicides, as well as accidents, suicides, deaths related to illness, cases still under investigation and one combat-related death.

The subcommittees will jointly investigate if recent deaths “may be symptomatic of underlying leadership, discipline, and morale deficiencies throughout the chain-of-command.”
