A source in New York’s real-estate industry said Durst was going to fly from Florida, possibly with his wife, real-estate broker Debrah Lee Charatan, who controls residential properties that Durst owns in Harlem and Brooklyn.
If the couple didn’t fly together, they planned to rendezvous in Cuba, the source said.
Charatan was in Florida over the weekend preparing to fly from Miami to Havana, but she scrapped the trip when Durst was busted, the source said.

My speculation is it will just be an all out "not guilty" plea and let the State prove it's case. Something along those lines was hinted at last night on Fox News.

MOO

I think so too. The handwriting is damning but any defense attorney can challenge it as well as his weird mumblings in the bathroom.
Do I think Durst did it? Yep
Do I think the State can prove he murdered her? I'm not so sure

I have seen the defense atty from Texas doing his presser. I can see why he won his case in Galveston but I am not sure his Good Ol Boy Texan Cowboy attitude will work as well in Los Angeles. JMO
I don't think he is going to convince anyone that Durst didn't write BOTH those creepy letters. It is so obvious. And if that tape comes in of him talking in the bathroom it will be hard to overcome. JMO

When I think of verdicts by CA juries I think of OJ, MJ, Robert Blake to name a few.......

Hello everyone.
Ive been watching the HBO series and it has been very well done. I never expected new charges. Wow.

I still have 2 more episodes to watch but I caught the news last night on CNN and Fox both had the clip from #6. Its pretty convincing.

What convinced me about the letters is the "S" at the very end. If you notice he does a really small hook at top of "S". That really convinced me the same person wrote it. Combined with the same mispelled word.

He will have a vigorous defense so this case will be very interesting to follow.
I hope he gets convicted this time.
There is no doubt in my mind that he did kill all 3.

I think he could have killed again if backed into a corner. He was arrested with a gun and they said on the news he may have been trying to go to Cuba.

Those were all huge heroes/celebrities though. Durst is a creeper.

A well known multi millionaire that has been in the news for over 30 years and was just showcased on an HBO docudrama.....He may not be famous but he is surely infamous.

True but he is not at all likable like OJ or MJ were. And that docudrama helps the State, imo, not the defense. I think he is toast.

I really feel sorry for his wife that was killed. They had a nice small place of business they opened up in a small town and they seemed happy there. When he got talked into moving to NY to help his father's business is when things went downhill.

Him and his wife never really wanted to move from that small town. They shouldnt have. I think the younger Durst let his father control his decisions with that move to NY. That was the part of this story that hits me the hardest.

The whole story is quite amazing and really sad in a lot of ways.

I need to read back through this thread. Some good info here.
Thanks everyone.

Interesting about theories about the LI serial killer. Thats another case that has always bothered me.

I loved the recorded jail conversations with his wife. When she told him that if his lawyer pleads insanity that will mean he wasn't sane when he married her and she wouldn't get any money. :giggle: I wonder why she married him?

Durst's marriage to Charatan is an interesting arrangement. I don't think they've ever really lived together as man and wife, from what I've read. He married her shortly before Susan Berman was murdered, and gave her power of attorney over all his finances.

deguerin is actually a very refined guy. i've met him several times. he does the cowboy hat and boots thing, and he owns a big ranch, but he's a gentleman. i don't think he'll be the bull in a china shop in L.A. he's a great defense attorney, but he takes the tough cases and he DOES lose.

what he did in galveston was CONVINCE that jury that they could NOT consider what happened after the crime at all. he told them all they were there to do was decide intent, which they couldn't do without the victim's head---and i bet that head would have shown he was shot in the BACK of his head which is why durst got rid of it. that he used 3 different tools to dismember the body and toss the pieces in the bay was supposedly understandable since bob thought the NY cops were hot on his trail and he was scared. it really was the stupidest trial i ever followed. add to that TWO jurors visited durst in jail later and one became his 'friend'.

anyway, the jury was enchanted by the defense, obviously, and the state, quite frankly, was overconfident and got steamrolled.

I agree that although he deserves to be punished he did have a sad childhood. In episode 2 he was telling how his father made him wave to his mother right before she jumped to her death. How horrific for a 7 year old. I think that event helped usher in his being emotionally twisted.

FWIW, with apologies if this has already been discussed, as I am about 5 pages behind:
I knew nothing of Robert Durst until a friend recommended The Jinx to me.
The thing that jumped out at me right from the get go, was that this was a sloppy criminal, who appeared to want to be caught.
Who puts a newspaper with their address in with the body they are disposing?
Who leaves a trail of blood that leads literally to their front door?
Who the heck steals a sandwich with so much cash in their pocket?
Sends a letter to the cops without making the slightest effort to disguise their handwriting?
Who on earth calls and asks to be interviewed in this situation?
Who, after already being busted coaching himself during a ‘break’ with a live mic, does it again?
For some silly reason, I had thought he just wanted this all over with. That he was tired of running, tired of having to deal with this world.
But really, if that was the case, why not just walk into his local PD and put his hands to the air and confess his crimes?
That just doesn’t fit.
I think he’s bored.
And invincible.
It’s a game.
He already beat one Murder 1 rap. He has the money to buy whatever BS defense he desires.
Still getting away with it? Why not start talking to the dude that made your movie?
Then, when you make your contrived ‘confession’, everyone will freak out.
Make sure to play with the pronouns, it will make for a fun defense.
He’s a crafty, scary, fascinating dude.

His brother thinks :
“Bob is incapable of telling the truth,” Douglas Durst said. “He is a true psychopath, beyond any emotions. That’s why he does things, so he can experience the emotions that other people have vicariously. Because he has absolutely none of his own.”

his family says that didn't happen and he's embellished that story over the years. but his mother DID kill herself and he was just a little boy so still traumatic.

His affect when speaking about things that should spark at least SOME emotion was really interesting.
I learned that every time he says 'Oh!' that something mind boggling will follow.
'Something bad happened to her then, right'
'Oh! She was murdered, around Christmas'
Said in the same tone of voice you'd say 'Oh! Shamrocks shakes are back'

My 'favorite' was when he was talking about dismembering Morris:
*Roughly*
'He had a lot of tools. He had an axe. He..uh... he didn't have a... bow saw. (awkward pause) Anyways, I went and bought a bow saw.'

My head about imploded when I heard that.
