The body of a young girl has been found on the Isle of Bute.

Police said a female child's body was discovered in woods at about 09:00 on Monday.

Police were alerted that a six-year-old girl was missing from her home in Rothesay at 06:25 on Monday.

The body was discovered in the grounds of a former hotel on Ardbeg Road. A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed that an inquiry had been launched.

The former hotel concerned is believed to be the Kyles Hydro in Port Bannatyne, two miles north of Rothesay. An area of woodland is understood to have been cordoned off by police.

The child from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, was reported missing at 6.25am today. At about 9am, officers found the body of a young girl on the site of a former hotel.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'At around 6.25am this morning, police were informed a six-year-old girl was missing in Rothesay.

:Cops were called to reports of six-year-old Alesha MacPhail going missing at around 6.30am this morning in Rothesay.

It is understood she was staying with her dad Rab MacPhail and grandparents Calum MacPhail and Angela King on the island.

Gran Angela had originally used social media to help spread the word to find the youngster.

Unless Alesha was on the autistic spectrum (or similar) I'm struggling to see this as accidental.

"The schoolgirl from Rothesay on the Isle of Bute was reported missing at 6.25am on Monday. Just over two hours later officers found the body of a young girl in the Port Bannatyne area.

It is believed she was found to be missing from her bedroom, prompting appeals on social media for people to search their gardens and outbuildings.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "At around 6.25am this morning, police were informed a six-year-old girl was missing in Rothesay. A search was undertaken to try and locate the child.

"At around 9am the body of a young female child was discovered in the grounds of an old hotel, Kames Hydro Hotel."

Her grandmother Angela King had put out a Facebook appeal for her safe return, saying: 'Alesha has gone missing from our house, please help look for her.'

The girl is thought to have been staying with her father Rab MacPhail and grandparents Calum MacPhail and Ms King on the island, reported The Sun.

After being reported missing at 6.25am today, Alesha's body was found at about 9am on the site of the former Kyles of Bute Hydropathic Hotel, which was demolished in the 1970s.

This is the first picture of the young girl whose body was found in woodland on the grounds of a former hotel.

The girl, named as Alesha MacPhail, from Rothesay, Isle of Bute, was reported missing by family at 6.25am this morning.

High Road in Arbeg, near Rothesay, was shut by a police cordon and a floral tribute had been laid near police accident signs.

A separate cordon has been set up outside numbers 50-53 Ardbeg Road and police tape has also been set up at the seafront on the opposite side of the street.
