Towyn: Man in court charged with sister's murder

Teen, 19, in court charged with killing girl, 15, at caravan holiday park

One of the press reports describes the accused person as using a motorized wheelchair to get around. In the photos I am seeing of today’s court proceedings, he does not appear to use any type of wheelchair/scooter. Wonder why the discrepancy? Edited to add: it was this article that mentioned the scooter and it is used by his mother, not by him. He is described as having “learning difficulties.” Teenager, 19, accused of murdering 15-year-old girl at caravan site | Daily Mail Online

Also surprised to read that, after the parents of the accused and the victim split up 2 years ago, the deceased went to live with her mother, while the accused went to live with the father, but was subsequently placed with his grandparents instead. Perhaps the dad wasn’t able to care for his son due to physical/mental health issues?

The Sun describes the scene of the crime as “a bloodbath” so I am really wondering what transpired here. It was a stabbing inside a caravan, but what prompted it? Sadly, this is just another case where a deranged older brother murders his younger sister. Layne Mays, Stephanie Panaigua, and several others come to mind. May they all get justice!

Also, this is a “stupid American” question, but is a “caravan holiday park” in the U.K. the same thing as an RV park here in the States? These are places where people can park their RVs and motor homes, and usually have access to some amenities like a swimming pool, kids’ playground, tennis or basketball courts, etc.

V similar, the main difference being that the majority of caravans are "static", i.e. they dont move. But its not really the same as your trailer parks, because these are vacation homes rather than permanent homes for low income families. If that makes sense!

Looking at the pictures in the item linked by @StillDiggin, he's a big lad. With learning difficulties and perhaps also some kind of mental health condition (given the charge against him) I imagine it's a physical challenge to look after him, and perhaps was too much for one person, or maybe has required a home big enough to allow for adapted space etc. I wonder if another key imperative was that the siblings were under different rooves.

A bad old business all round.

Lost in translation even after checking it out.

What's a caravan holiday park? Like an RV park? Sad no matter. Just trying to get a vibe.

During a short hearing at Mold Crown Court, Selby appeared via video link from Berwyn Prison in Wrexham, and prosecutors put an additional charge of manslaughter to him.

In response to the additional charge, Selby replied: 'I can't understand.'

Judge Rhys Rowlands said he should be produced in person at the same court on February 7 so he can formally enter a plea.

Matthew Selby admits killing sister at Towyn caravan park

A 19-year-old man has admitted killing his teenage sister in a caravan on the north Wales coast.

Amanda Selby, 15, died at the Ty Mawr Holiday Park in Towyn near Abergele, Conwy county, on 31 July.

Matthew Selby of Windermere Crescent, Ashton-under-Lyne, appeared at Mold Crown Court to enter his plea.

He had previously been charged with murder but has now admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The case was adjourned until 18 March so that further psychiatric reports can be done before Selby is sentenced.

Selby appeared via videolink from HMP Berwyn, near Wrexham, for the hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes.

Ian Unsworth QC, prosecuting, said the Crown accepted the plea to manslaughter, based on close analysis of psychiatric reports.

Judge Rhys Rowlands said: "I too have read the reports from both psychiatrists and plainly I understand the decision taken by the Crown."

Gordon Cole QC, defending, said Selby would be seen again by a psychiatrist before his sentencing.

On Monday, Gordon Cole QC, appearing over a video link, accepted a new timetable leading up to a provisional sentencing date for his client on September 30 at Mold Crown Court.

Selby, who was at the court building on Monday morning, did not come into the hearing. Judge Rhys Rowlands did not believe he would have a firm grasp on the proceedings without his solicitor also being physically present in court.
