Woman's body found at Burton beauty spot

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found at a Burton beauty spot today.

An area of the Washlands in Burton town centre has been cordoned all day.

The playground behind Burton Library fronting the River Trent is cordoned off with police tape and officers have been spotted in the area. The woman's body was found at 4am this morning, police have said.

There is also a blue tent on the pathway next to the park. The pathway goes past the nearby Meadowside Leisure Centre, off Meadowside Drive.

Staffordshire Police have been combing the area for clues and forensic officers have also been seen at the scene.

Police have now revealed that a man has been arrested in on suspicion of murder connection with the woman's death, with officers urging the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigations continue after the body of a woman was found

Forensic investigations continue following the body of a woman being found at a Staffordshire beauty spot.

A police cordon also remains which stretches around the playground on the Washlands behind Burton Library and encompasses a set of trees and part of a pathway nearby in the area near the River Trent - A blue tent remains in place close to the trees.

The cordon has now been in place for more than 30 hours after the woman's body was discovered there at 4am on Friday, July 2.

Police officers were on guard in the areas this morning which were otherwise empty. The playground remained out of bounds with a cordon taped to the gated entrance.

Police at the scene today said they were unable to confirm when the cordon would be removed.

Yesterday police revealed that a 53-year-old man has been arrested in on suspicion of murder in connection with the woman's death, with officers urging the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He remains in police custody today, a spokesman for Staffordshire police said.

Fresh appeal in Burton-upon-Trent woodland murder inquiry

Police investigating the suspected murder of a woman whose body was found in woodland are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

Officers were called to Washlands, near Meadowside Leisure Centre, Burton-upon-Trent, at about 04:00 BST on Friday.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out on the woman's body but further tests were needed, police said.

A 53-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on conditional bail as inquiries continue.

A small area of woodland was cordoned off by police but this has now been lifted.

"Formally identified, and may not be for some time?"

Meaning her family needs to be contacted? Is the suspect the only person who can ID her?

An inquest date into the death of a woman who was found on the Washlands in Burton has been set.

Angela Winter, 56, was found near a playground at the Washlands in the early hours of July 2, last year, and a man was originally arrested on suspicion of murder. However, he was cleared of any involvement when it was determined that Ms Winter's death was not murder.

A pre-inquest review hearing into Ms Winter's death heard on December 22 that the police no longer believed Ms Winter's death was murder.

The case has now been changed to a "coronial investigation", meaning the coroner will determine the circumstances in which Ms Winter died.

Her cause of death is 'to be ascertained' according to the latest coroner's report.
