Why was he arrested? -----was he drunk ?

The bend where the tram derailed has a speed limit of 12mph, and the Rail Accident Investigation Board has said that the train was going significantly faster at the time that it derailed. Apparently they and the British Transport Police are investigating whether the driver blacked out or feel asleep. There's no safety protection system on the tram system.

what is the difference between a tram and a train? Was this vehicle attached to overhead wires?

yes, trams have the attachment above to get power.

The tram's driver was Alfred Dorris, 42, of Beckenham, south London, was arrested and bailed afterwards

Detectives are investigating claims he was halfway through writing a text message when the tram derailed

was travelling 'significantly' above the permitted speed while police are also examining a report that a tram 'lifted onto one side' at 40mph in the same area on October 31.

Colleagues have said that the driver may have blacked out.

Safety features in the cab mean the tram slows down if you let go of it for three seconds, but he fell on it.'

Trams are urban rail systems which get power from overhead power cables.*

Electric trains can get their power either from overhead cables or from a live third rail between the two the wheels run on.

* Many years ago there were also trolley buses. These were also urban transport systems which took power from overhead cables but did not run on rails. Effectively they were a double-decker bus powered electrically from overhead.
