Cold Case: Detectives re-investigate 2002 murder of Glasgow man Darren Birt | The Scotsman
By Stephen Wilkie
Friday, 25th March 2022 rbbm.
''Officers are re-investigating the murder of Darren Birt, who suffered fatal injuries after an altercation broke out in the Barlanark area in the city’s East End.

At round 1.30am on Wednesday, August 28, 2002, Darren was found lying in the roadway in Calvay Place with serious injuries to his body.''

''Detectives discovered that Darren was attacked by men armed with hammers and knives. Three men were charged but not prosecuted and the murder attracted little media coverage.

One of those arrested was Malcom Kelt, 47, who was previously convicted of killing another man nearby with a sickle and was later jailed for a violent assault in Edinburgh.

Darren’s father, Brian Birt, later wrote a book describing his killing as ‘the forgotten murder’ and campaigned for a new investigation.''

"We know that Darren was chased from Edinburgh Road down toward Burnett Road shortly before he was attacked, someone must have heard something."

20 years on since Darren Birt was brutally murdered in the Barlanark area of Glasgow, detectives are renewing their appeal for information.

On the evening of Tuesday, 27 August, 2002, 22-year-old Darren was in Burnmouth Road at a gathering when an altercation occurred and spilled out on to the street.

In the early hours the following morning, around 1.30am on Wednesday, 28 August, 2002, Darren was found lying in the roadway on Calvay Place with serious injuries to his body.

He was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary but died a short time later.

A number of people have come forward with information following previous appeals but detectives believe that there may be other members of the public who have not yet come forward.

As part of the renewed appeal, senior investigating officer, DCI Lynsey Watters will be appearing on BBC One’s Crimewatch today, Friday, 7 October at 10am.

Crimestoppers are also offering a £20,000 reward to anyone who contacts them with information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Speaking about the appeal, Detective Chief Inspector Lynsey Watters said: "Darren was only 22-years-old when he was murdered on Wednesday, 28 August, 2002.

“His death undoubtedly had an absolutely devastating impact on his family and it is important we do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.

“At the time of Darren’s murder, the public did assist and come forward with information, but I do believe that there are people still out there with information who, for whatever reason, have not spoken to the police.

“With today’s national television appeal, it is hoped that we may reach these people or jog someone’s memory for a detail that might seemed insignificant at the time.

“If anyone out there has information that could assist us in getting justice for Darren, I would urge them to pick up the phone – call police via 101, call the programme or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, if you wish to remain anonymous.”

I lived in this general area a few years after this poor chap was murdered so was interested to search google based on an original suspects name. freely available online and seems like new information might be a long time coming due to the fear factor. jmo

''Now a team of experts from BBC's Crimewatch will examine the case for the first time. A reconstruction of the incident, produced by Crimewatch and Police Scotland's Major Investigations Unit, will be broadcasted.

Residents living close to the crime scene near to Calvay Place and Burnett Road in Glasgow received letters from Police Scotland on Wednesday. Investigators urged locals to watch the BBC reconstruction carefully in the hope it can provide vital information as they bid to crack the case.

The force has also offered a reward of up to £20,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the killer.

Detective Inspector Lynsey Watters said in the letter: "I am seeking information in respect of the above incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 28 2002, in Calvay Place near to Burnett Road Glasgow. This incident is being investigated by Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team and will feature in the BBC's CRIMEWATCH programme on October 7 2022.''

'
Darren’s death was reported by STV News in 2002, but otherwise received little media attention with a total of four brief reports in local newspapers.

In an era before social media, there were no online pleas or tributes.

Brian indicated that the media and online vacuum contributed to his son’s case.''
