UK - Jean Campbell, 53, Glasgow, Scotland, 13 Dec 2013

DNA Solves
DNA Solves
DNA Solves
This is a shocking story. I hadn't even heard about this poor womans horrific murder until i spotted this thread.

This months Crimewatch is on this Wednesday, 22nd Jan at 9:00pm. I'm hoping this story will be featured and an appeal made.

Its freezing over there right? Who else would be out in the cold? Even serial kilers like to stay warm. Maybe another dog walker or cigarette smoker?

It's not unusual for people to be out and about at that time of night, especially on a Friday in the outskirts of Glasgow, regardless of temperature or weather. Cranhill is only 10-15 mins from the city centre.

Re: Crimewatch - The re-construction this month is relating to a sex attack raid elsewhere in Scotland, but nothing about Jean that I can see.

So sad to read about Jean's dear husband. With the arrest being made in the Mikaeel Kular case, maybe the headlines will return to this tragic case and John can get some answers.

I can just about get my head around a teenager making a very foolish and untrue 'boast' once - but twice?

It's interesting that his mother mentioned the park is a 'hangout' for people at night. Though it wasn't very nice weather that night, to hang out anywhere outside. The savage way poor Jean was killed doesn't lead me to think this could have been an opportunistic mugging gone wrong though.

I never noticed before, but near the bottom there does seem to be a family member pleading with people to share this old police FB post to help get information in. So if anyone feels able to, please share. I can't imagine how Jean's poor family must feel, knowing her killer is still strolling around.
If he's got a smile on his face, I hope it gets wiped off soon.
Sorry.

I don't know if I linked this old article before. Jean's case was featured on Crimewatch on a TV station which is nationwide in the UK. Police did say it generated some calls, but I'm guessing they didn't pan out, as that was back in January.

It's hard to believe they didn't obtain any DNA after such a violent attack, and Jean being found so soon. But maybe police did, but just haven't been able to obtain a match?

Local residents and friends have raised £6,000 for Jean's family, through a series of fundraisers. The money will pay for Jean's funeral, although her body has still not been released to family.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a shred of new information about what police have termed this extremely brutal, violent murder of a wife and mother out walking her dog. Someone must know something, and it is incomprehensible no-one has come forward. This person has to be a high risk of offending again, I would think - that sort of rage doesn't just spill out and then disappear forever.

'Crimewatch has shown in the past it can be the catalyst for unsolved crimes'

I wish someone would come forward with something - this was a terrible, brutal crime. I hope a family member speaks on the show, and tells us a little more about Jean. People are more inclined to help people they feel they 'know' somehow.

I am being reminded of a case where another woman was savagely attacked in a park and killed, but I believe her killer was caught. I'll have to try and find it.

Bumping my own post as I cannot find this case. It was an Indian lady. her throat was cut in a park very near her home. She screamed out "You b******" before she died and neighbours heard her.

I just cannot recall if her killer was caught, or where she lived.

Jean was killed by 'blunt force trauma to the head and chest'.

From initial reporting, I thought she had been stabbed. It puts a different light on this crime to me, possibly. Jean's killer didn't necessarily have to have been carrying a weapon - feet or fists could cause such trauma, or just something picked up from the ground. So perhaps the killer hadn't set out to murder in advance, but something happened?

I really do not know if this was a stranger crime with a lurking predator, someone Jean was unlucky enough to cross paths with and have words with and things escalated, or someone she went out to meet. This kind of killing is often the kind carried out by a gang too - is it possible they asked Jean for money, or didn't like her dog, and she was then attacked?

I would think police have some idea which it may be by now. I wish they'd say if so.

Police don't say they found a murder weapon, I think, but don't say they are searching for one either.

It's hard to understand why there where no screams heard if this was a beating death - unless Jean was knocked out by the first blow. I hope so.

Thanks, Zweibel, for keeping us updated on this case. I feel like I have something of a connection with Jean: I am 53, I have two German shepherd dogs, and my mother's family is from outside of Glasgow.

I have always felt safe with my dogs around, but now I know not to be too relaxed about my safety, even when they're close by.

I keep checking back to see if there is any new information on Jean. Her husband seems to be devastated and I hope the killer is found soon.

Jean's case, featured on Crimewatch this evening, is now available online at the link below.

I've heard the police have a suspect, have him on cctv in the area at the time of the murder, but have no concrete evidence to hold him. He is a juvenile and has since moved away from the area. It is thought his mother is covering for him.
The appeal on Crimewatch tonight appeared to be LE trying to get people to search their conscience.
