Two young men have pleaded not guilty to murdering a missing teenager.

Ben Cook, 19, and Louis Hackett, 19, are alleged to have murdered Kieran Williams, 18, on April 18. Kieran was reported missing from his home on Esplanade West in Sunderland on April 18. Extensive searches were carried out by officers and his body was found in Pallion near the Northern Spire Bridge.

Cook, of Fordfield Road, Sunderland, and Hackett, of of Fordenbridge Square, Sunderland, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on video-links from prison. Both pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and were told they will stand trial in October.

Judge Paul Sloan QC told them: "Each of you will be required to provide a defence case statement setting out, in detail, your defence to the charge.

"If, and I stress the word if, you have committed any offence arising out of this allegation, the sooner you tell the court the better for you, the more credit you will receive, the less severe the punishment will be. The longer you leave it to tell the court if you have committed any offence, the worse it will be for you."

Ben Cook and Louis Michael Hackett, both aged 19 at the time, repeatedly denied knowledge about the disappearance of 18-year-old Kieran Williams, who was last seen on April 18, Easter Monday, last year.
But Newcastle Crown Court heard that after his partly decomposed body was found in a makeshift grave in an old industrial area, near the new Northern Spire Bridge, over the River Wear, in Sunderland, on June 2, both gradually began to change their stories.

David Lamb KC, prosecuting, told the jury in his opening outline in the case, that the body was found to have multiple stab wounds and bruising to soft tissue in the back.

Newcastle Crown Court heard on May 31 a grave, which had been concealed with sticks, leaves, litter and branches was found and Kieran's body was discovered buried inside

The burial site was in a secluded, wooded area at a former industrial estate near the Northern Spire bridge in the city and was surrounded by trees.

The court heard an attempt had been made to set his body on fire when he was in the grave.

Mr Lamb said Kieran's body was examined by a pathologist and told the court: "In his professional opinion, death occurred in the course of a prolonged and sustained attack, given the number of injuries and their locations."
Jurors heard Kieran's aorta, a vital artery, his liver and spine had been damaged during the attack.
Mr Lamb said Kieran's body had not suffered any fire damage but he added: "It is clear an attempt had been made to set fire to him as there was fire damage to Kieran's clothing.

The trial continues.

A teenager's decomposing body was found with multiple stab wounds and buried in a grave at a disused industrial estate more than six weeks after he went missing, murder jurors have heard.

Kieran Williams, 18, was last seen on 18 April 2022, when he visited his mother's home in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, and he was never heard from again.

Newcastle Crown Court heard on 31 May that a grave, which had been concealed with sticks, leaves, litter and branches was found and Kieran's body was discovered buried inside.

The burial site was in a secluded, wooded area at a former industrial estate near the Northern Spire bridge in the city and was surrounded by trees.

Ben Cook, 19, of Fordfield Road, and Louis Hackett, 20, of Fordenbridge Square, both Sunderland, deny Kieran's murder and are being tried by a jury.

David Lamb KC told the court Kieran had suffered at least 20 stab wounds to his chest, torso, neck and had injuries to his hands, arms, legs and feet, which may have been from trying to protect himself.

Hackett told police Kieran was "like a brother" and claimed during questioning he had not seen him since he went missing.

The court heard after Kieran's body was discovered, Hackett was arrested again and told his finger prints were found in the clay of the grave and within the grave itself.

Mr Lamb said Hackett later gave detectives a prepared statement and told the court: "He said he hadn't killed Kieran Williams but that he had met Kieran Williams on April 18 last year and attended the area where the body was later discovered.

"He said once they reached the area of the grave an argument developed between Ben Cook and Kieran Williams, in the course of which Ben Cook produced a knife and stabbed Kieran Williams numerous times.

"He said he tried to pull Ben Cook off Kieran but Kieran collapsed.

[...]

Cook, who had also previously denied having any knowledge of what happened to Kieran, was re-arrested after Hackett's allegations were made.Mr Lamb told jurors: "Ben Cook gave a statement and said they went to the area of the grave, where the grave was dug, in order to smoke cannabis."He said Louis Hackett attacked Kieran Williams and he had seen Louis Hackett stab Kieran Williams multiple times.

The trial continues.

The jury in the trial of the two defendants accused of the killing of a teenager lured to the scene of his death has been sent home for as second night to resume deliberations tomorrow (Thursday February 2).

Ben Cook, 19, and 20-year-old Louis Hackett each deny the murder of Kieran Williams, whose body was found in a makeshift grave dug in a secluded tree-lined area on a former industrial site, on the southern banks of the River Wear, near the new Northern Spire Bridge, in Sunderland.

A jury at Newcastle Crown Court was told the burial site, which had been covered with branches and other foliage, was found by a police dog handler acting on information on May 31, last year, almost six weeks after the last reported sighting of Mr Williams, on Monday April 18, Easter Monday, last year.

The jury in the trial, which began on January 18, retired to begin its deliberations, on Tuesday (January 31) afternoon.

Having not yet reached all verdicts in the case, the jury was sent home by trial judge, Mr Justice Robert Jay, today (February 1), to return to court to continue deliberations in the morning.

KIERAN WILLIAMS TRIAL: Ben Cook and Louis Hackett cleared of murder but Hackett guilty of manslaughter

Two pals accused of killing a friend who was found stabbed and buried in a clandestine grave six weeks after he was reported missing have been cleared ofmurder but one faces jail for manslaughter.

Ben Cook and Louis Hackett have been on trial accused of repeatedly stabbing 18-year-old Kieran Williams and burying him at a disused industrial estate.

Today, after deliberating for more than a day, jurors at Newcastle Crown Court cleared Cook of murder and manslaughter.

Hackett, whose fingerprints were in the clay of the grave, was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and will be sentenced by trial judge Mr Justice Jay at a later date.

A teenager's killer has got away with murder, a court heard, as his friend was jailed for luring him to the scene of his death.

Kieran Williams, 18, was stabbed more than 20 times then dumped in a makeshift grave at a disused industrial estate near the River Wear in Sunderland.

His close friend, Louis Hackett and Ben Cook were cleared of murdering him but Hackett was convicted of manslaughter.
However, in a dramatic twist, a judge said the "real perpetrator or perpetrators" of the murder have not been caught and he said he was sure it was not Hackett or Cook who had killed him or tried to set his body alight.

He added that "justice had not been done" in the case.

[...]

At Hackett's sentencing hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, Mr Justice Jay said: "This is the sort of case I will never forget as it's such an unusual case."

And in an unexpected revelation, he added: "I don't believe either of these young men were the stabber, it was someone else."

The judge told Hackett: "You were not Kieran's murderer. It's difficult to be sure what happened that evening but certain hard facts are clear. Kieran was one of your best friends, he trusted you completely."

Hackett persuaded Kieran to go out and meet him at the place where they would regularly meet to smoke cannabis. Mr Justice Jay said: "You knew something untoward was to happen to him, however you did not know he would suffer really serious harm, still less that he would be stabbed 23 times in a brutal attack.

[...]

The judge said both Hackett and Cook had told the jury a "complete pack of lies" but told Hackett: "You lied out of what I believe was a need to protect yourself and out of fear."

He added: "You were not aware a partly dug grave would be awaiting him. Had you been aware of the grave you would be guilty of murder."

[...]

Sentencing the 20-year-old, of Fordenbridge Square, Sunderland, to five years in prison, the judge said: "The sentence I impose can't do justice to Kieran or his family. He was brutally murdered. So far the real perpetrator or perpetrators has got away with it. Justice has not been done but it won't be done by sentencing you for more than you are due."

[...]

This makes slightly more sense as to why they weren't both convicted of murder. I wonder if the police have an idea of who this other person was. Surely they must. There must be communication between all of them on their phones.

“We can confirm this remains an open investigation and we are actively pursuing a number of lines of inquiry, and we will also continue to act on any new information which comes forward.”

“Do the right thing and help us get justice for Kieran and his family.”

That’s our plea as we continue to investigate the death of a teen – whose body was found in a makeshift grave a year ago.

Kieran Williams, 18, went missing from his Esplanade West home on April 18 last year and extensive enquiries were carried out to locate him.

However six weeks later, a make-shift grave was found on a disused industrial estate South of the River Wear, between the Northern Spire Bridge and Claxheugh Rocks, on May 31.

Kieran was sadly found in the grave and he had been stabbed multiple times and his body set on fire.

Two men were later charged in connection with Kieran’s death and stood trial at Newcastle Crown Court, where they were both acquitted of murder.

But, one of the men, 20-year-old Louis Hackett, of Fordenbridge Square, was found guilty of manslaughter and jailed for five years.

However, a judge concluded at the hearing that Kieran’s killer remains at large.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Steel, the senior investigating officer for the case, has today urged the public to help and “do the right thing” to secure closure for Kieran’s family.

He said: “It has been one year since the body of Kieran Williams was tragically found – and justice has not yet been done for his family.

“This was a truly horrendous murder where a young man was brutally stabbed at least 23 times and left to die in a hidden grave for six weeks before he was located.

“As ever, our thoughts remain with Kieran’s loved ones as they continue to come to terms with their loss, and we remain committed to getting answers for them.

“I would like to thank them for their dignified approach whilst this complex investigation has been ongoing – and after an outcome at court that did not provide the closure they deserve.

“While Hackett was found guilty of manslaughter at a recent trial, our investigation remains very much open as we actively pursue a number of lines of enquiry.

“A dedicated team of detectives continue to comb through the evidence in this case and follow every avenue to identify any other offenders involved in Kieran’s murder.

“And today, on the anniversary of Kieran’s body being found in such horrific circumstances, I am urging anyone who knows something about Kieran’s death to do the right thing and get in touch with us.

“It was well reported at trial that, in addition to Hackett’s, there were also other unidentified fingerprints found in the grave. And while enquiries are ongoing, we need support from the community to help identify anyone found to be involved and bring Kieran’s killers to justice.

"Simply put, Kieran’s murder continues to haunt his family day and night – so if not for our sake, please do the right thing for them to end their prolonged suffering.

"If you are reading this appeal and know something about the circumstances of Kieran’s death or other people involved, please do not delay in contacting police.”

Anyone with information about Kieran William’s murder is asked to contact us as soon as possible through the dedicated Major Incident Public Portal online Public Portal - search MIPP online or 0191 437 4750.

Anyone who believes they have been at the site of the grave, formerly owned by Coles Cranes, between the Easter and Jubilee weekends of April 15 and June 2, for a legitimate reason, is also urged to get in touch so they can be eliminated from the investigation.

You can also report information anonymously by calling independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
