Stephen Nicholson, of no fixed address, 25, is on trial accused of murdering Southampton schoolgirl Lucy McHugh.

He denies the single counts of murder and sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 years, and two counts of sexual activity with a child – one of which relates to a 14-year-old girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, dating back to 2012.

As previously reported, 13-year-old Lucy's body was found in a wooded area at Southampton Sports Centre on July 26 after going missing from her home in Mansel Road East the previous day.

A post-mortem later revealing she died of stab wounds.

A murder investigation was launched by police, who taped off a large area of the sports centre following the discovery.

Nicholson went on trial at Winchester Crown Court this morning accused of murdering and having sex with 13-year-old Lucy McHugh.

The 25-year-old also faces two charges of sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl in 2012.

At the start of the trial at Winchester Crown Court, he pleaded not guilty to three charges of rape against Lucy when she was 12 years old and two charges of sexual activity with a child when she was aged 13.

PROSECUTORS are today set to open their case in the murder trial over the death of Southampton schoolgirl Lucy McHugh.

At Winchester Crown Court, William Moseley QC is set to outline the Crown Prosecution’s case against Stephen Nicholson, who is accused of the teenager’s murder.

It comes after a 12 person jury was selected from a panel of 50 potential jurors.

The Honourable Mrs Justice May DBE is the judge in the trial, which is set to begin at 10.30am today.

The court is still fairly empty at the moment, likely to fill-up in the next few minutes as members of the prosecution, defence and the press arrive.

Today, prosecutor William Moseley QC will open the Crown Prosecution's case.

To recap what we know so far:

Lucy left her home in Mansel Road East, Southampton at about 9am on July 25, police have said.

Her body was found the next morning in woodland nearly two miles away, at Southampton Sports Centre.

A post-mortem examination revealed she died from stab wounds.

Stephen Nicholson, 25, of no fixed address, was charged with an allegation of Lucy's murder, which he denied at an earlier hearing in January.

The trial at Winchester Crown Court is set to get underway shortly. A number of people are sat in the public gallery.

Lucy’s mum Stacey White was pictured arriving at court earlier this morning.

The trial will begin in earnest with the prosecution’s opening statement which will provide an outline of the crown’s case against Stephen Nicholson.

Nicholson has just entered court.

Fourteen members of the jury being sworn in

At the moment barristers in court are discussing timetables and the possible length of the murder trial.

The press bench is full and the judge is also in position in the courtroom at Winchester Crown Court.

The prosecuting barrister is William Moseley QC, he will be reading from the opening statement shortly, it is expected.

The jury is about to be sworn in - 14 with two serving as ‘spare’ in case any other members of the jury need to drop out.
