Those poor children were just looking to go to a dance event with their families and are now either in hospital beds or body bags. I also have immense respect for the two adults who were trying to protect the children.

I hope they all make a full physical recovery, and will be able to begin healing mentally, even if they may never be able to fully heal.

"Parry said the children involved were primary school age
and that one older girl,
believed to be a teenager,
had been stabbed
as she tried to usher the youngsters to safety out of the building.

He said:
'He just stabbed her in the back as well
while she was trying to get the other kids back'.

Locals were bringing children out of the building trying to tend to their injuries
before the emergency services arrived."

RIP to the victims :(
My sincerest condolences to grieving families.

May those in hospital recover.

I also hope they physically recover.

I don’t know that you ever fully recover from an attack like this. You survive. You hopefully develop resiliency and strength and thrive surrounded by the love and care of those around you and those who did their utmost to help.

Every caretaker and parent and parent and child there has seen pure evil regardless of the motive(s) that come to light. May they now be surrounded by grace as they move forward.

It appears to have come directly from the police: https://www.merseyside.police.uk/ne...ennedy-following-major-incident-in-southport/

"It is with great sadness that today I am here to advise that two young children have died as a result of injuries sustained in a knife attack this morning.

"Nine other children have been injured, and six of them are in a critical condition, all those injured have suffered stab wounds sustained during the attack. Two adults are also in a critical condition after being injured during the incident.

"A 17-year-old male from Banks in Lancashire, who was born in Cardiff, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives

"My officers were called to reports of a stabbing at 11.47am at an address Southport. When they arrived they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries.

"It is understood that the children were attending a Taylor Swift event at a dance school when the offender, who was armed with a knife, walked into the premises and started to attack those inside. We believe that the adults who were injured were trying to protect the children at the time they were attacked.

"As a mum of two daughters, and the nanna of a five-year-old granddaughter, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering the families of the victims are currently going through and I want to send them our heartfelt condolences and sympathies.

"Our specialist Family Liaison Officers are providing support to the families at this terrible time.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything, or who has information that could help our investigation or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

"Anyone who has been affected by this incident, can contact our Victim Care Merseyside service for help and support.
Our hub of local, trained staff is here to provide free, emotional and practical support tailored to your needs.

This is such a horrible attack targeting little children

Thank you to the brave dance teachers for trying to stop the attack I hope they survive their injuries (from my experience of holiday clubs these people are probably quite young to so it really is heroic)

This world is getting more & more scary by the day.

My thoughts go out to the families of the two children who died and I also send my best wishes to those fighting for their lives tonight.

Also my thoughts go to our wonderful emergency workers who witnessed that scene today

Yea but I don’t think he will ever get a life tariff
Brianna Gheys killers got around 20-22 years each.
And they were particularly large minimum sentences for defendants of their age. They were still life sentences though.

The sentence for murder in E&W is always life, juvenile or adult. But the minimum term before juveniles can apply for parole is usually significantly lower than adults. But they still have to be successful in applying for parole. In theory they could still remain in prison for the rest of their lives if the parole board never deems them suitable for release and even then they remain on license for the rest of their lives and could be recalled to prison at any time if they commit further crimes or breach the terms of their license.

Out of Jamie Bulger's two killers one (Jon Venables) committed further offences while out on license and was recalled to prison where he remains today. The other (Robert Thompson) has not so far re-offended and remains out on license.

IANAL

The bbc news at 10 has just reported that the 17 year old was born in Cardiff. Sorry, no link as it was on tv.
so the rumours on social media are certainly partly nonsense. Jmo, imo

Edited - this link mentions Cardiff
BBC News - Southport knife attack: Two children dead and nine injured at dance workshop - BBC News

Can juveniles be tried as adults there?
Yes. Ours system works slightly different. If you are tried even as a child it doesn't get sealed/written off at 18 regardless. Hence our police tend to try and avoid criminalising children so they aren't stuck with a record for being young and dumb.

Age tends to reduce sentences but I imagine with one as heinous as this his age will make little difference

To receive a whole life order, the offender must be 21 years of age or older at the time of the crime.

I expect the highest term the judge is able to apply will be given in this case upon conviction.
There are detailed rules for judges to follow when determining the minimum tariff for a life sentence for murder. How it works is that the judge choses a starting point and then adds time on or takes time off for aggravating or mitigating circumstances. The starting points are vastly different between a 17 and an 18 year old convicted of murder. For example -

"In cases where the offender brings a knife to the scene and uses it to commit murder the starting point is 25 years for an offender aged 18 or over and 12 years for an offender aged under 18."

Does anyone better versed in English law than me know if when somebody is convicted, if they are sentenced on the basis of their age when convicted or their age when they committed the offence?

The Telegraph is naming businessman Jonathan Hayes, 63 as one of the adults who rushed to the studio to try and disarm the suspect and was stabbed in the leg and is awaiting surgery. His wife describes how distraught he still is over not being able to prevent more carnage. A true hero, in my eyes, I am so grateful that we still have men that try and protect women and children.

In the same article they also report that the suspect is the child of Rwandan parents who originally settled presumably in Cardiff and who moved to the Southport area when the suspect was six years old.
