Earlier today specialist officers were among those in attendance near to the Bridgewater Canal in Boothstown , Salford.

Officers were seen searching the canal, near Moss House Lane, this morning. Their search appeared to switch to woodland nearby, including the football pitches used by Boothstown Football Club, in the afternoon.

GMP says it is also conducting searches for Peter in nearby Astley, Wigan . A spokesperson for the force said: "GMP and specialist officers are currently conducting a thorough search of a section of the Bridgewater Canal and surrounding wooded areas, around the Boothstown and Astley areas. This is due to information received regarding a missing local man, Peter."

Just for context - this canal is not somewhere you would want to swim in right ?? there is not like a heap of boats travelling up and down it ?? that near a major road ? like someone dumped his stuff there ?? I don't like this case -- sounds like a terrible ending.. but for hope's sake I hope I am very wrong.

The canal is massive, over 40 miles long I believe? No, definitely wouldn't want to swim in there, it is bright orange in some places (around the Worsley area)

ETA- It is easily accessible from main roads, it runs alongside them

Thanks for clearing that up for me. _ I wasnt sure - well hope they just use the sight to dump his items and he somewhere else ?? fingers are crossed that he found ok - people are normally kidnapped because the kidnappers want something right ?? I hope they find who took him. I really do.

No problem at all :)
It is unnerving that his belongings were seemingly dumped. I really can't understand who would want to target Peter- maybe a robbery gone wrong? I hate to speculate, especially when it is so close to home but my initial inkling was either suicide or an accidental fall. But that doesn't really explain the belongings.

Sadly all it takes is the wrong place at the wrong time - seeing something you don't even know is sketchy to have this happen to you. could have taken just driving or walking past a car with something shady going on .. sadly doesn't take much to be treated so poorly by another human :( :( this is a sad story. I wish very much to be wrong on this case. In fact, I someone gives me a happy dance and tells me I am wrong about the expected outcome of this..

This is also very close to me. Do we know exactly what belongings were found, I did read bank cards, anyone know anything else? Canal isn’t particularly deep and I’m sure divers would have been in. Area to me knowledge pretty low on serious crimes. Daughter Of Peter is putting details of searches on her FB and there is one today.

Kidnapping is very, very rare in the UK. It is usually only seen in cases of child custody battles, or as a means of facilitating fiscal re-alignment between stakeholders in the pharmaceutical distribution sector.

I hope there is good news about Peter soon, but the proximity of water, as always, is a real worry.

I really hope this isn't a similar case to Charley Gadd and the family gets either brilliant news or closure soon. I can imagine the waiting is excruciating

From the article you get from the family how totally out of character this is for Peter to be missing, with no Mental health problems or any signs something wasn’t right. These are the possessions of Peter that have been recovered.

After days of extensive searching, Michelle said Peter's hat, phone, bank cards, tobacco, house key, headphones and an empty bottle of whiskey have now been recovered, with some items close to the canal embankment at the bottom of Vicars Hall Lane. Searches are still ongoing to trace Peter.

Police looking for a dad missing from home for six days have launched a fresh appeal for information.
